Estimate on Design/Development Hours

Hello Warriors,

This is a simple question and I only need a rough estimate:

For a PROFESSIONAL/EXPERIENCED developer, how many hours do you think it took to develop and design (themes, colors, etc...) a site such as Texts From Last Night (I can't post a link due to post count restrictions, but Google that and it'll be the first result)?

I have received several drastically differing opinions on the effort required to build a site like this and am wondering what the good people of the Warrior Forum think.

    everyone is going to say different things. just interview a few different designers in your price range. you could probably start your search on craigslist.

      I was talking to a colleague about a website idea similar to this over a beer last Friday evening - we were inspired by the amusing stories on a similar website regarding customer service 'incidents'.

      From our discussions, we felt we could modify Wordpress to offer similar functionality, allowing for a lot of user controlled content, moderation and feedback and integrating advertising channels to provide revenue.

      Admittedly the chat was a little alcohol fueled, but from what I remember we were saying 25-30 hours to design a layout from scratch, code it into Wordpress, create some useful plugins, integrate advertising etc. After that maybe 8-10 hours to test it intensively, preferably with 5-10 users creating content and testing the functionality of the website.

      At a rough rate of $40 per hour, we were looking at $1000-1200 for the site and an additionall $300 for the testing time period. It's still on the drawing board, but certainly a little project we might push ahead with early next year.

    After that, it's mostly putting together the basic layout and graphics. Depending on what you want, this could range from a day or so to several weeks.

    for design only, i usually spend about 6 or 12 hours, start from finding free image royalty to be use in the design and trying the best layout for the website.

    for coding the design, it will takes more than 2 days....

    If I was to create custom a WordPress template that looked like that with just the normal posting features.

    Optimized graphics, and a CSS drop menu, unique one time price would be around $500. But that is not set in stone and would require a full breakdown of what would be needed.

    Browser support down to IE7, IE6 on request only and usually a bit extra depending on the design.

    It would go up depending on what special functionality you would want.
    By unique one time is no one would have rights to it besides you...

    Prices will differ greatly from person to person depending on what they plan to include.
    Some developers figure cost for items that you don't realize your getting.
    Sometimes with the cheaper bids your not getting what you think you are.

    So you really have to be specific and make sure that they understand what you want.
