Not sticking around long!

Hi,

just recently finished redoing a site that I partnered with my father on. We are not getting a lot of traffic at the moment and the traffic that comes doesn't stay long.

I would appreciate any constructive criticism. Took a while to ask, because was afraid of a bombardment, but I and my pops wants this site to really take off.

Thanks in advance.

Greg

What does the site have to do with retirement?

You have a great keyword in the title and then it's not mentioned again on the blog.

Two lines immediately caught my attention "welcome to our site" and "let me introduce myself". Honestly, those are common for new site owners. When someone arrives at your site you need to hit them with interesting information that appeals to THEM and is "about" them.

You seem to be trying to cover multiple niches with one site and the right side is only one affiliate link after another. That's probably why visitors aren't staying - there isn't anything there for them except "buy this" or "buy that".

If they are looking at retirement information sites, this one would not appeal. I ddin't click on the sections or read much text but you need to decide what the focus of the site is going to be and then go in that direction. Right now it's too much "stuff" and too many niches.

Start by doing a google search for "retirement" focused websites and look at what they offer and how it is presented - and what they use to hold the visitor's attention. You will quickly see what I mean by focus.

About your bounce back. Your target market may quickly lose focus and easily get confused or overwhelmed at too much infomration presnted at once.

I would first establish a very solid USP and then build a more precise funnel that would create more retention in accordance with this USP.

Unique Sale Position, what's the end of it?

What exactly you want your visitors to do, once they land on your page?

From there, you build a funnel to bring them to this USP.

This is the most important thing to think of when building a web site, even before keywords, and weirdly enough most are completely missing the point.

        Regards,

        Andre

yes. I am starting to see this now. That is what I am going to do. My father just turned 65 this month and in now officially 'retired' himself.
The domain is a great one, thank you for the compliment.
It is 11 years old and already a PR3 with the Big G.

It is funny, when building it, which took some tweaking to get certain things to do what they do, you (meaning me) kind of get 'lost' with the focus.

Pretty soon the site snowballed to the 7? categories.

I appreciate the wishes for good luck and the thoughts on making it better.

I knew I could count on fellow Warriors for feedback that I could trust.

Thank you all. I am looking forward to more opinions.

Ok. I see what you mean.

I think that is what happened to us. Our USP kind of got lost in translation. I guess we might have figured that if we got the traffic, and they came and were interested in the content, they would hang out and probably click on something to buy.

      Thanks for the tips!

      Really good thoughts!

I have been sharing these with my father and it has created quite the stir.

We are now discussing our 'goal'. What is our 'USP'?

Really easy to lose that focus when you are emotionally attached. Actually it is pretty amazing, I don't feel me or my father are less intelligent people, yet it happened.

It is always good to look back and learn, though. I am not going to lie and say it isn't frustrating spending a few months (part time) and dozens to hundreds of hours putting it together as is and knowing it has to get revamped or completely changed.

      But, live and learn.

Lots of directions to go with a 'niche' like this. Considering the directory idea now, something like ez empire builder and focus on one or two ads.

Considering chopping the categories down to maybe just one, instead of the 7, which is really a desperate 'shotgun' approach. Big mistake.

I hope others come here and can learn a few points from this, the same as I am!

Thanks again for all the great comments and thoughts!

Understand who your audience will be. At retirement age, I doubt if I would stay on a site that had slim looking people with sharply defined muscles telling me to slim down. but hey! that's just me.

I found the navigation confusing and did not really understand where to start. All the comments above are really good.

I just checked back and saw the responses. Thank You.
I do appreciate it. I am like most people and don't want to hear what I did wrong, but, I know I have a potentially big site here.
I want to do it right. It should be doing better than it is.

    I appreciate the constructive criticism.

    Thanks again Kay and Andre.

I think you have an amazingly good domain name. All you have to do is keep that "retirement" in mind and build the site focused to that market.

There are many opportunities to monetize a retirement site but first you have to create a focused site with information people are looking for.

Hint: Don't look for affiliate products yet - brainstorm with your father to see what "retirement" issues HE would think about or ask about.

    Hi!
Just wanted to expand a bit about what's already been said. I don't know how you're trying to get traffic but whatever method you are using, you might want to funnel them to a landing page that talks about a specific aspect of retiring rather than so much different information at once. When you design that landing page, keep the golden rule of copywriting in mind - it has to be about them and not about you or your website. Write about benefits instead of features. No one will ever care about all the wonderful things you have to offer - they will only care about what they are going to get out of it. Tap that and you'll get those conversions.

Best of luck to you and your father!

Having that many ads and links on the front page screams "buy, buy" to me.

That could be why your visitors are also saying "bye, bye".

Put the majority of the advertising on the inner pages and in a more subtle and targeted manner, i.e. not all of them on the page.

      Good luck,
      Tina

Right on! And an USP could be just to get them on your list, btw.

i agree with kay king 'nice domain'
but without totally relevant content your killing it which is a shame.
(if i wasnt so new i would offer to buy it)

my advice would be to focus heavily on retirement articles, retirement home listings (paid) general info for your niche market.

as it stands i can see why you dont get traffic and when people see nothing related to the domain.......they leave within 2-4 seconds (time it takes to fully scan the page for something interesting)

    content is king

    Thanks Calvin for the comments.

You know when you are attached to a project, it sometimes get difficult to see the forest for the trees.

Funny you should mention the navigation. This is the 3rd version of the site. (The second was never released to the public - went right to the 3rd)

and the Navigation was really bad on the first. Never realized it till longer after the first launch.

One of our priorities for this one was to make it easier to understand and 'poke' around on the site.

Good point about the 'slim people'.

Thanks for the comments. All good points.
