The nature of our site has us displaying a lot of links. Think of us as a search engine that searches for you.

The problem is that since we're not famous . . . yet, when people hit our page, we look like a link farm or landing page. We've been trying lots of things to get a first design that looks good, but still no success.

Reddit, hacker news, google, pretty much look similar or worse, but they have brand name recognition.

Any ideas? Any sites that have similar problems, but look good? Digg is the one we're thinking of right now.

Your landing page lacks SUBSTANCE when it comes to design.
The Facebook like button and social bookmarking is good. It made the page feel less... parked.

You need something pretty above your navigation bar, there's way too much white space on the top.

The spacing & padding between elements is minimal, this makes it look a little cluttered.

    Suggestions:
    1) Throw in some rounded corners (not too many now).
    2) Play around with layers of the same colour at varying opacity (perhaps in the header, above the navbar?).
    3) Get some JQuery/AJAX in there, make things look spiffy.

Don't over do it and add clutter though.

Dude. you made my day. I just added the bookmarking + facebook stuff last night!!! I thought it might make things a little better, and you noticed!!

Yeah. I need a real logo. Time to find one. Totally agree. Something pretty.

Really? spacing problems? I thought I was getting better. Can you be specific where? Trying to keep it readable, but still efficiently usable.

I'll play around with your specific suggestions. Thanks for being specific. Helps a lot.

A few suggestions based on looking over your site:

    1. Try making all the pictures the same size; I think that will make it look much more credible.

    2. You may experiment with putting the picture on the left side instead of the right. This is the way all major news outlets do it so something to be said about that. Plus I know there is some psychology stuff that goes with that behavior.

    3. There isn't really anything for people to "do". Give visitors something to do and tell them to do it at the top of your site.

    Good luck
