Confused about templates

Hi wonderful warriors! I have built a fishing website using wordpress and mandigo, because that's how the "website package" was when I bought it for 40 bucks on ebay back in March. The "package" included Cpanel, which has many other options for design, including Joomla, Etc.
I guess my question is, how hard would it be to "re-design" my site with a different website builder software, while keeping all of my current content? I know some basic HTML, and that's about it. (that will be obvious if you view my site). I hate the way it looks now, but I can't afford to pay a web designer just yet.
How would one go about transferring my content into newly designed pages? I've looked at a zillion Wordpress templates, and to me they seem to be for blogs rather than sites such as mine.
I may be able to purchase a nice looking template for around 63 dollars, which seems to be the going rate, and I've seen some that I like. But if the process of installing this new template into my site requires extensive web-design knowledge, I'm SOL.
What can I do? Please help.
>> I can't post links yet, so just add dot com to my username - that's my website URL.
(by the way, if you would like an explanation of my crappy looking site, see my previous thread in this same forum - titled: "Old newbie needs help"
Thanks in advance for any help!

If your content is on a WordPress partition you can just export the database, and uploaded it to a new WordPress theme and all the content will be there. Just make sure to take note of your URLs! Because if you change them from 'sitename.com/fun-stuff' to 'sitename.com/fun-stuff.html' every page on your site will have to be re-indexed, and you can't simply redirect them because thats against Google's TOS.

      This is so totally wrong.

OP, you do not have to export anything. You do not have to note URLs. Even if you DO change URL structure at some point in the future, it is most emphatically NOT against Google's non-existent TOS to redirect old to new URLs.

Let's handle a couple of things - Joomla and the other CMS software packages that are in your cPanel are not 'options for design'. They're completely different platforms from WordPress, and you have no need to try and transfer your content from one to the other.

Secondly, you don't want to re-design your site with other software. You'd be in the same mess you are now, but with a different set of problems.

Changing WordPress themes is as simple as uploading a folder to your server and activating the theme. So if you do find one you like, it's very easy to get it installed. Now - whether it's going to work well with the way your site is set up now is a different critter. You may have to have some help. On the other hand, it may work perfectly right out of the box. You'll not know until you try.

Because I built my website using Wordpress, will I have to stick with a Wordpress theme, or can I use a website template from another source? That's where I'm confused. All of the wordpress themes I've seen are "bloggy" looking. My pages are set up more like a website, I think. I've seen some really great templates that I like, but if they are for, let's say, Dreamweaver - how could I use that template? I figured I'd have to download Dreamweaver, and then "transfer" all of my content to that program. {scratching head} I'm very confused.

The short answer to your question is Yes, you have to stick to a WordPress theme if you use WordPress as your content management system.

        The longer answer:

Many of the themes and such that you're seeing are basic HTML. There is no back-end for managing those files. You have to know HTML/CSS to add stuff to them, change the look, etc. (Dreamweaver is Adobe's HTML editor software). Others are for Joomla, or Drupal, etc. which are content management systems like WordPress, just of a different flavor.

Let me try a metaphor that may help you out:

Think of your website like a car. The Content Manager is like the engine of the car. It makes the thing go. It has a certain way of interacting with all of the other parts of the car. The theme is like the car's chassis/body. It creates an interface for people to work with.

You're going to have a tough time putting a Chevy engine into a Nissan. They're laid out differently, they fit differently into the engine compartment, they're just not going to work together, and the car isn't going to go anywhere.

You've got a Chevy engine. You need to provide a Chevy chassis/body or you're going to have to do some serious work to convert something else to work with the engine you've got. That's more work than you want to take on by yourself without professional help, I assure you. (In this metaphor, HTML templates for Dreamweaver are like a bicycle...)

I recommended in your other thread, and somebody else recommended here, that you check out the stuff over on Themeforest.net. They have tons of great WP templates that don't look too "bloggy" and that can help you feature your content, and show off the products you've selected.

I would encourage you to also start planning a budget to get a professional to help you build something that looks more like what your vision for the site might be. It may be something for the future, but I assure you that you're going to spin your wheels for a long time, and wind up with a lot of frustration if you don't start planning for that now.

@standupandspeak - Thanks again dude for the good advice. You are a big help. I have asked my web host if they can upgrade my Wordpress to 3.0, as it seems most of the themes I like are for that version, and I have version... um, how do I find out what version I have? I do know it ain't 3.0, though. I really like the "magazine" type themes, I think that would fit my site well. I have so much work to do, it starts to get overwhelming.
On a good note, two weeks ago my Alexa rank was 8 million+, last week it dropped to 4 mil.,two days ago it was 3.6 mil., and yesterday it was 2.8 mil., so it seems that all of my hard work is finally paying off a little. I also finally got indexed by the big G, yay!
well, back to work on the ol' Chevy!

I just looked at my "source" code, and I have Wordpress 2.7

there are many themes out there and if you don't want a "bloggy" looking site you can modify it... css and php

if you don't know css or php you can maybe ask a friend... you don't need to go ahead to professional designers... better you can slowly and gradually learn it by slowly and gradually tweaking it.

        1. make an overall picture of how your site must look like... since your site has three columns (1 for main content and 2 for sidebars) look for a theme that has the same features
        2. download and install that theme.. it may not matter if they don't have the colors that you want because you can edit it...

installing the theme and redesigning it won't affect your content.

I get my theme's here newwpthemes (dot) com/ and then I redesign them by tweaking on the css code and php. As an example, this is the orginal template of the new site i made newwpthemes(dot)com/wordpress-theme/prestij/, I tweaked it and turns out like this (second site on my signature). It could take days but it is also an investment to your skill

maybe you're not a techie (I'm not but somehow learning hehe) but the internet has so much resource and that you can find answers by just searching it on google. as an example is that when I see in a css code a hex color "#00BEF2"and don't know what color is that I just type it on google.

Yes, you'll need to stick with wordpress themes. Check out the themeforest, buy something there. 47$ is max that you can pay, and thats rare, mostly 32$.
