I have no idea where to start

Hey everyone

So I have been looking into getting a website going, however I have no idea where to begin.

I have had a look at wordpress, but it seems that no matter what I do, with my current and easy to gain knowledge, I can't make the page look like anything but... well... a dry blog, that I personally won't look twice at.

So where do I go from here? To begin with, I'll want a relatively simple site, with about 10 pages, easy navigation on either a left side panel, or top side panel. I don't want calenders and what other stuff Wordpress insists on pressing on me, and if possible, some banner spacing instead of that.

How do I go about accomplishing this goal, and at the same time build a knowledge foundation I expand apon as I go?

    There are many themes that suits your needs, but not all of them are free. Start with free theme, or buy one on themeforest. In the meantime, learn photoshop and html/css if you want to build a knowledgde, or start modifying something.

    You can make wordpress look something better than website

    Based on your description, see this for example Orange Software Technologies (this is wordpress, which i modified). And is really cheap

    I would just search for "free wordpress themes" first and see if one of them would be appropriate for you. I'd think for a simple site this would be all you need. You never have to use any particular widgets, and you can easily get rid of them if they make things look to cluttered for your needs.

    Hi Sokar408,

    If you already have some knowledge on IT, so investigating about how to work with Wordpress would be great, you can create nice website using Wordpress as many people have done this.
    If you do not have knowledge on IT, my advise is to have someone else do it for you. In this case, it can be Wordpress, or other programming languages.
    Or if you do not have knowledge on IT, and want to learn it yourself. You still can. But it will take time ^.^

    First of all decide platform you are going to construct your site like
    1)HTML and css(if you know coding in html and css)
    2)Script you are going to use to add functionalities like(PHP ,java script,ajax etc Note:- you need a coding knowledge to do this)
    3)if you are going to use Cms then choose which cms You are going to use here i am providing some list of CMS
    1) Joomla-http://www.joomla.org
    2)Drupal- Drupal - Open Source CMS | drupal.org
    3)magento-http://www.Magentoecommerce.com
    4)after doing all this make Photoshop design of your dream website
    5)then proceed with sliced images in designing phase when you reach this phase you will have clear idea of how do make a web site
