Why is this taking so darn long to load? Wordpress help.

Hey guys,

My father-in-law's site is taking way too long to load. Is is just all the text? I tried breaking it up with the "more" tag (the continued reading "thing") but the main page for example still takes a long time.

It wasn't like that until I upgraded his version of Wordpress. Now it seems to take forever.

At least 20-30 seconds.

Any thoughts on why it's so heavy?

It's God or Men. He's a pastor, (and a good man) so his posts are more like sermons - no pun intended.

It took just 3 seconds for it to load up for me. Not slow on my end at all.......

Seemed very fast for me too. might be on your end.

Check your connection speed at someplace like speedtest.net

If that's not it, install Firebug and Pagespeed in your Firefox browser; Pagespeed will tell you exactly how long everything is taking.

IME the biggest speed issues with WP come down to plugins accessing third party sites like twitter. if you got that kind of stuff going on, check there...

      good luck!

    Hmmmm.....

Does it make a difference what browser you're on?

Thanks for checking. Henry and I have both found his site to struggle from two different locations and pcs.

Nathan - looks and loads great for me. I'm using Win7 and Chrome on a fast cable connection, but did a test at Web Page Analyzer - free website optimization tool website speed test check website performance report from web site optimization and even on a slower connection it shouldn't be an issue.

How do other websites display for you? Have you run a speed test to see how fast a connection you're on? Are you hosting any other sites with the same web host - if so, are they taking a while to load too?

Hi Steve - Oddly enough the connection speeds don't seem to pose a problem. The other odd thing is that it's the only page/site that seems to be doing it.

Although, it now appears to load quite quick. But I SWEAR this is "the first" in a few random test in as many weeks.

    Go figure.

So...I'll "keep an eye out" and see what comes of it. I'll have to have the father-in-law see for himself.

Thanks for checking on it too.

That's correct its very slow on my computer too. Try installing different theme, even though twentyten is a nice theme. Sometime if u change theme it might work or contact hosting provider.

U can try to deactivate all plugin and activate it again. Delete all unused plugins as-well.

Loads fine for me. Could be a cache problem in your browser, I have that from time to time and have to clear everything.

There is definitely an issue there.
It may be intermittent but it was there when I visited.

Even your WP Cache plugin says so
<!-- Dynamic page generated in 41.100 seconds. -->
    <!-- Cached page generated by WP-Super-Cache on 2010-11-19 03:13:48 -->

Almost a minute to load the home page.

You may want to do some debugging.
Start with disabling plug-ins, including the cache plug-n and see if that helps.

    Hi Nathan,

There's definitely an issue. It took around 40 seconds to load initially - that's way to long for a web site.

As has already been noted, your WP Super Cache plugin is taking an extremely long time to load; when I looked at your page's source code, it said:
<!-- Dynamic page generated in 41.190 seconds. -->
    <!-- Cached page generated by WP-Super-Cache on 2010-11-19 06:28:37 -->

Clearly WP-Super-Cache has an issue which means it is taking far too long to generate a cached page before showing it in the browser, hence the initial delay (subsequent page loads seem to be OK).

Disable this plugin, clear your browser cache and reload the page (Ctrl + F5)

If you're a Firefox user, I'd recommend https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5369/ - it's a plugin that lets you analyse all of your page's components (Javascript, images etc), and tells you their sizes, load times and general graded score. Your site seems to do OK on this, but it's worth noting if you come across issues in the future.

    Tim.

Thanks guys for all of your testing and visiting the page. How many times do I have to find out I seem to know nothing?

I guess we all have our specialties. But the way you guys throw out the "what-to-do's" is pretty impressive - although it might seem normal and easy to you.

If you ever want to know how to spin a pen all crazy around your fingers...my friend can do that. I can talk to him for you hehe.

It is slow for me too. Totally a hunch but did you try turning off the Sexy Share plugin? If that helps, I'd set it to display on post only and page but not on home page. I'd do that anyway myself.

Having it repeat like that, just don't think it can be a good thing.

Rusty - That seems to make a huge difference. And that might just be it.

Have to see. Thanks for the tip!

    Your welcome.

I like that plugin. I ised it in the past. I had to stop as it was getting in the way of my ad placement. haha

I think it contacts the developers site each time it is displayed.

The site is very fast for me now.

Nathan, what host are you using? Also I have seen certain combinations of plugins to cause slowness.

By the way, it loaded fast and without issue for me. I'm on Comcast cable modem here in Houston, Texas.

Hey JR - By host do you mean hostgator for example? That's where it's hosted if I read you right. As it turns out -it's loading great now thanks to removing the bookmarks plugin from most of it.

    Awesome.
