Wordpress newbie problem - won't install themes? or plugins?

This is my first venture into Wordpress, so bear with my ignorance, although something doesn't seem right even as a Wordpress newbie.

My problem is I'm in my dashboard and tried to install a theme, and when I click on install, it just sits at:

"Downloading install package from http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/download/grunge-wall.3.6.zip…"

EDIT: to clarify, nothing happens, no download windows open, no new themes appear in the dashboard, no new anything anywhere.

I also tried to install a plugin and it stuck at the same place with the same message. Everything else has worked great so far and I'm pretty impressed with the Wordpress concept, but this is definitely killing my momentum lol...thanks for any help.

You don't see any of this except for the first line:

    Downloading install package from http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/d...3.6.zip…
    Unpacking the package…
    Installing the theme…
Successfully installed the theme Grunge Wall 3.6.
Actions: Preview | Activate | Return to Theme Installer

    How long do you wait?

Your hosting company has to allow outside access for PHP. If they are available, check your server error logs just after you attempt to install a plugin, or ask your hosting company.

I have seen this issue as well, but usually it is another plugin that caused the problem, how many plugins do you currently have installed or is this a brand new installation.

It's a brand new installation, no other plugins installed, and only the 1 included theme installed. The hosting company is 1and1. I will check the error logs, although I did notice there is a corresponding file in the themes folder for every attempt I made but the file size is 0 bytes. I'm guessing this might point to the PHP issue mentioned?

Just ftp the plugins or themes. I have experienced it before.
