Hi, can anyone help with this, when I do a search in google for personal trainer glasgow my home page shows up, currently 14th, phfitness.co.uk

The problem I have is that when I hit the pages from the UK button in google this is the page that is showing up first phfitness.co.uk/View-by-tag/Personal+Trainer+Glasgow/

Just want to know why this is happening and how can I get my home page there?

Do I need to change robot text or something?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

robot.txt would only help you block phfitness.co.uk/View-by-tag/Personal+Trainer+Glasgow/ from being indexed. I don't think this is what you want to do.

The reason that subpage is outranking your homepage is probably due to keyword density, fresh content, or other SEO elements. If the search string you used was "personal trainer glasgow" then google is going to love your subpage because that exact phrase is part of the URL. The URL is the most powerful element of SEO.

It could also be from SEM such as backlinks directly to your blog profile.

I don't have time to perform an indepth SEO analysis of your site, but I'm pretty sure robots.txt is not your problem or your solution.

It is kinda doing as it should... the search is for [personal trainer glasgow] is turning up all your pages with that tagged in it (and thus presumably in the content) and also the url in it too! So yeah, where is the problem? Kidding.

If you want to "fix" this, there is a few ways around it. Of which robot.txt is but one, I'd suggest instead you add something to the top of your category page. For instance, you could make it only show up to google searchers and say something like "hey google searcher you would also be interested in these [blah blah deals and our blah blah events etc]" (or whatever is suitable).

btw Ambius... backlinks is not "SEM", that would be SEO (arguably you "could" call it SEM if you are paying for the back links... but that is wrong :p )

I consider SEO to be things onsite (img tags, urls, density, etc) that Optimize your page for high rank, and SEM to be things offsite (backlinks, articles, directory submissions, etc) that promote your site across the internet in an effort to Market your page's quality towards search engines for higher rank. but maybe I'm using the term SEM incorrectly.

Paid links and adwords are a different type of marketing.

Also, you mentioned that robots.txt would be one method to solve his issue but I don't see how robots.txt would help. Please explain?
