Any video experts that can help me?

I've made a video presentation for my webpage. I made the original in Windows Movie Maker (wmv) at just over 4 minutes long. This movie came out to 79 MB.

I then converted it to Flash and it came out at 66 MB. This seems a helluva big file to me. Previous videos I've done came out to 2 MB per minute max.

The video size is pretty big at 640 X 360 and it contains some complex content including animation and live video plus a soundtrack. Also, I kept the conversion settings at high quality because I want a professional look. But even taking all this into account the file size still seems way too big.

Is a 66 MB flash video too much to be practical? If so, what can I do to cut it down? Reduce the size... quality settings... compression?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Thanks for the converter link, jonny. This converter seems to work real well but what is the best format for web viewing? I usually use flv or swf.

I understand that 3gp is the new format for mobile devices but does it have any value for use on websites?

        Hi,

flv lets you have some control over the image when it is played, depends what it is wrapped in, eg. you can stop, pause, play etc. the swf will fire in a full screen mode if called directly with none of the controls available.

I've tried both flv and swf and it seems that swf is the only one that will stream automatically. Is this correct or is there a way to make flv or other formats stream automatically?

I've made a lot of videos in the 1-2 minute range, and I can tell you from personal experience that even using high-end compression software like On2 Flix or Sorenson Squeeze, about the best you'll be able to do with a highly animated 640x360 video is @ 10MB per minute (assuming 15fps, which is about the lowest frame rate you can use before it starts to look "jerky").

Lots of complex movement in the video (ie animation) is what makes the file size blow up. If you used the same settings on a simple "talking head" video with a still background, it would be a fraction of the size.

So for a 4 minute video like the one you described, figure @ 40MB, or maybe 35MB at best, if you use good compression software. If you squeeze it anymore than that, the quality will start to take an obvious hit. Of course if you use smaller video dimensions you would have a smaller file size.

That said, I agree that FLV or SWF is your best option for that type of video. Both have the option to stream automatically, if you configure the player to do so. Check out Flowplayer or JW Player - both are great players.

Thanks a lot, Brandon. I've tried an swf conversion at 25 MB but the quality suffers a little so I think you're just right at about 40 MB.
