Domain/Hosting Problem!

I rebuilt a site for a friend and we decided to go with hostgator and wordpress. I went to his first host .ws in Samoa, directed his domain name servers to host gator. I completed the site everything worked and 2 weeks later bam, his site is no where to be found. I finally figured out that he didnt renew his domain. When he called .ws they say that he has to pay $20 a month because his domain name went with their hosting plan. That cant be right, $20 a month for a domain?

Isn't the page I built in the wp content folder at hostgator? I can get the same name in .com, but how do I get it to transfer over!

Needless to say big problem! Can someone please help?

Many thanks in advance,
Tony

I would think they are referring to the cost of hosting per month as hostgator (and everyone else for that matter) only charges a annual fee for the domains purchased. If the .com is available as you say I would purchase it and add the hostgator dns, then contact hostgator and tell them you want the main domain on the account changed to the .com extention.

Thats what I thought, but they said that was part of their (scam!) program, that if he wanted to keep his domain name he would have to continue his hosting with them.

So get the new domain, direct name servers and hostgator can move the files over.

Thanks a bunch! You know just when you think you are getting the swing of things there is always more to learn. Always a new challenge, thats why I want to do this for a living!
    Thanks a bunch!

BTW .ws is owned solely by Global Domains International. The domains are sold through resellers. If you have a .ws domain I would contact WebSite.ws – Your Internet Address for Life and get more information. Your domain should have come with a members account where you can login and admin the site and DNS and other stuff.

It doesn't matter where you register your domain... Well aside from the obvious issue with some hosting companies.

Since your .ws domain is dead anyway and you are looking at a .com I would go to Godaddy and register the domain. Once you have registered the domain you can host it wherever you like. Just go into your account control panel on Godaddy and set the nameservers for the nameservers that you get from Hostgator. Hostgator should be able to make the DNS change in their records. If not just open a new account and let the old one die. (did you pay for a year up front?)
