OK, I took the previous comments to heart and have been trying some new techniques using the "less is more" approach. Particularly using the principle that the only graphics on the site are the targeted ads.

please let me know what you think, criticisms, or if it looks weird, or something.

One big question I sort of need answered is this: do I need a really spiffy logo and/or menu bar?

Well to me your site looks quite boring :/

I think i nice header at the top of your page is a must.

Also, have you considered breaking the site down into lots of little pages - you can't expect visitors to read through all of the info on your homepage to find what they're looking for.
A good navigation bar at the top would make it so much easier to get around your site.

It looks like you've got some great content, now organize it in a way that will make it easy for visitors

kkoechel .. this is a LOOOOOOOOOOONG page.
I dont know what the google algo(s) thinks of pages like this but it cant be all good.
Google have said they dont like long loads though and they dont usually like multiple duplicate content even when its credited.
That said .. it could bring in a some people from the google search box - what they will do when they are there is unknown as there is no specific call to action. Maybe add some premium links.
In a site of this kind a pretty banner may not make much difference unless it carries a specific message.
      Good luck - elronzo
