Say the client wants a website for his band. And he wants to update the news and tour information himself, what would be the best way to do it? Citymax, Wordpress, Dreamweaver?

If he want to update himself then you have to make CMS so he can update himself

You have two options, use a CMS like WordPress, Joomla etc.

Give your client lessons on HTML/CSS and let him update the site himself.

A content management system (CMS) is what you'll likely want to go with. Most run on a database and PHP language. They are template based and you can add/swap themes for the whole site with a click.

There are many free ones out there. Drupal, Joomla, php fusion etc. They have an administrator login and allow you to update/create static pages and news articles. They also have extensions you can install to add a special functionality.

I've been using Joomla cms forever and know it well so I use it for most everything. Each one is a little different.

Wordpress is probably the easiest, since it involves little more than your client using a wysiwyg editor in admin.

I would go with WordPress I don't think there is an easier solution. I don't know the skill level of your client or what they are capable of, but, what people think they can do is often different from what they are able to do.

With some minor instruction they should be able to use the editor in WordPress. If there is any html involved you might need to give them a notepad txt type html swipe file with the code snippets they will need.

I have found that many of the "wants to update themselves" type people turn out to be constant seekers of free help no matter how detailed your instructions are. Make sure you are clear to them when the initial set up ends and when additional paid support begins. If you're not clear about it people often feel entitled to endless free access to you. Especially the "do it yourself type" clients.

I would do one of the following:

      1) Use Wordpress and show them how to use the control panel to add/edit posts

      2) Use a regular website, but on the page where they would make changes, use comments to make it clear where they should put the text they want to add and update. If you get them hooked up with a WYSIWYG HTML editor (I use CoffeeCup), they should be able to change blocks of text by following the instructions you put in the comments.

      Hope this helps!

Of course, wordpress and joomla are the most used CMS but I won't start yelling "miracle" because using those, you talk about "client" and well, I will never allow a "client" paying to use open source software.

Someone already said it and I can just underline it: Build a CMS and allow your client to personalize the contents by it. Of course, creating a CMS is not like going to walk in a Park but it's better that providing an open source software... that need also to be upgraded, the client need to have good care of it otherwise.. have you forgot the world of hackers?

Do you know that not well managed wp/joomla websites are the best lunch for an hacker?

Use Content Management System to upgrade the website client himself. Worpress, Joomla etc. are helpful to CMS websites.

I think it is really important to think of yourself as a part of the client's team. This is a very different mindset than the mindset that you are simply designing a site for them in order to get paid. Making your clients feel as though you are on their side will make for happy clients.
