wordpress/blog newbie, three easy questions

Hello folks,
I have just started creating my first wordpress blog-- actually my first ever blog of any sort-- and I need some help, please. I expect these will be simple for experience wordpress users to answer.

And Yes, I'm sure Google would answer these, but I am asking here because I trust you all and I'm not skilled enough to sift through the plethora of other information out there.

  1. I am having trouble getting my Aweber form to show. I used the Aweber plugin and followed the directions EXACTLY. I am also curious as to why I cannot change what shows on the screen, i.e. where it says "blogroll" and the "calendar".
  2. I am having trouble posting a new entry to one of the pages I have created. Are new entries supposed to be in the form of comments only?
  3. Finally, what are the "categories" for and does "uncategorized" just mean that it will show on my home page? (I know what a "category" is-- I just have no idea how a blog uses and displays them, and because I have just created the blog it has very little content at this point. I just want to know how they will be shown/searched so that I plan to use them effectively.)

Thanks in advance!

Hi, well, I think I can give you a little background on 3, it is the most important part of your blog, but most new worpress users, and a lot of old users do not realize just how important it is.

Now on number 2, I am not sure what you are asking, updating, or adding a comment,

on number one, sounds like a widget problem, if you are using 3.0.4 which is the latest, there are sometimes strange and unusual effects that sometimes happen when upgrading, but usually the problem lies with the theme your using.

    1. Nope, I have not upgraded yet, which is odd because I just created the Wordpress blog today, but it still tells me I need to upgrade... I was thinking it may be my theme that is causing this problem, which is an expansion/extension of one of the basic themes. When I can make the time I will change the theme to a basic one and test the theory.
    2. I have over 100 individual products and I want to list them on one "page" or group of pages. My question is whether they can each be their own individual entries, and how to do it? Is the page simply a "first post" followed by comments? If this doesn't make sense or I'm not using the correct words, I apologize. I still hardly know what I am doing. THIS is actually the reason I made the blog to begin with... I'm trying to figure out the best way to list my products so that people can purchase them through Paypal? If you have a different suggestion, maybe something other than Wordpress altogether, I am open ears.
    3. OK, how and why are the categories important, and how do I use them? Can you give me an example?

let me know if that works, I would be interested to see if that is the problem

      Try this, WPecommerce (no aff)
there is a free version but they also have some other cool stuff too,

      SEO,
Categories are like the isles at the super market, they tell you where to find the catsup, or the bread, same thing with SEO, using permalinks, tags, like this,
      HTML Code:
      /%category%/%postname%
And you can have lots of categories, you can even have sub categories, but it takes time to setup, when you get the time do some keyword research and take those keywords and link them with categories, then link posts with categories,

There are literally tons of stuff to do, just take it one step at a time,

FYI - there are 2 ways of updating a WP Site:

      1. Using the update option in the admin section, and
      2. Using your hosting company's "Installed Applications" update section.

Now the big difference between the 2 is, your hosting company does a more thorough
update than if you update from your admin area. That's why you can get an update notice from your hosting company even though your admin area shows the current version is installed.

      I hope this is helpful...

Tim, first of all, thanks for all your help up to this point!

As for the Aweber web form, that turned out to be my mistake. I had two web forms with the same name, thought I had deleted one, but did not... that's why nothing was showing when I put it on the Wordpress blog, it was too large (I had the width maximized) to fit. This was easily resolved by replacing it with the correct Web Form in my Aweber settings (and deleting the other one properly.) I was even able to put it in place of some of the other stuff I did not want.

As for WPecommerce.... WOW from what I have seen so far it is going to be perfect... Easy to use and very customizable, THANK YOU!

As for the categories, that's still a little above my head, I think I'm going to just have to learn by doing it. Do you know an example of a WP site that I could look at to see what you're talking about?

Hi, sure no problem, that's what it means to be a warrior, as for the categories, its really easy, but for an example just have a look at the website in my sig, it is a good example of how I use keywords in every aspect of the wordpress platfrom from pages, to categories and even menus, everything is a keyword.
