Hello to all,

Just as the title says I am a three week newbie here and want to start learning WP. Saw post where someone said you need to use the purchased version of WP. Is this true?? where do I find a good intro manual on the basics to get a simple landing page started.

Thanks

    Hiya,

I'm completely self taught so firstly, you can teach yourself to do everything you need. That includes essentials like installation, right through to completely custom WP theme design.

Honestly, you don't need a book. You just need to get used to scouring Google for every answer you need. That's how I've learned everything I know.

So don't take this as ignoring you, but my suggestion is you start by searching for the answer to your first question.

I'll give you a hint though, all WordPress is free....

I started pursuing IM about 4 months ago. I have looked at countless promises and programs to teach me internet marketing. As it happened I joined an affiliate program, you may have heard of the company, GDI. It's a solid company and they have a good product. Without question the best thing, in my opinion, is their commission structure. In any event, I was fortunate enough to sign up under someone who has invested hundreds of hours into building up training material for his team. It is genuinely amazing. It's been 3 months and I still haven't made my way through all the video tutorials. There are at least 80 video tutorials that deal with topics ranging from how to get 1st page position on Google to how to take advantage of all the SEO opportunities in Wordpress. Then there are other video tutorials like 18 videos that deal specifically with Google and SEO "How To's". and another set of videos, something like 32 that are just advanced Wordpress.

There are also dozens of SEO softwares and twice weekly live webinars and I haven't even scratched the surface. And it's all free when you join his team. So actual cost is $10/mo for the GDI service, i.e. a website. GDI sells hosting services. Anyway what is comes down to is you get a website through GDI specifically through this particular downline and the training material is provided for free.

I'm actually working on putting together a video about the training materials to use as a recruiting tool because the value of this material would probably be in the $2000 to $3000 range.

It's definitely something you might want to look into. Check out my sig.

I knew after I made a comment on this post a lot of you contradict.

But I guess do a search in youtube.

The difference about free and paid version, well the paid services would stand for along time compare to free services. Free services has it's limitation. You've got to bother yourself and preoccupied keep on asking what or how and why...

Anyway, I understand the newbies part. To start investing into paid services they must earn money for free before they invest. Or invest comes later.

LIke example when it comes to webhosting. I have a free services but there are times they can terminate your account w/ no further questions ask. Unlike paid hosting you get the feel or consistency about your webhosting.

First, congrats on getting started. WP is a challenging place to begin. What you learn mostly begins with what you want to accomplish.

If you're just wanting to learn WP to do a simple blog to share with friends and family then using a blog at WordPress.com — Get a Free Blog Here is a great place to begin. It gives you a free blog and allows you to get a feel for how WP works without any monetary investment.

If you're looking to internet marketing, WP is still a good place to start, but you'll want to purchase your own domain name and a hosting account (such as Web Hosting Services, Reseller Hosting, and Dedicated Servers by HostGator) to install your WP. This will cost you a little. $10 / year for the domain name and about $5-10 / mo for hosting.

For the basics of using and installing WP, you can find most of it on YouTube. I have a few videos there if you'd like to give them a try. Search YouTube for "how to install wordpress" or How to begin using wordpress."

There are some good teaching programs out there that you pay to learn WP. Find one that lists the things you'd like to learn and meets your cost requirements. It might be faster than trying to weed through all the free information.

You can do this. I started this way as well. Set a goal and enjoy the journey.

      All the Best

To get familiar with wordpress, I started off by making a personal blog at wordpress.com Many features are the same. It is a good way to start. If you plan to use Akismet from Wordpress to keep out the spam comments, you are going to need your free AP key - darn, is that what it is called? sorry, I can't remember the exact name of that key WP gives you. When you build your first site on wordpress.org - where you have to buy your own domain and hosting for it - you need that key you got from your wordpress.com site to use over at all your wordpress.org sites.

Geeshh....did that make sense? I should quit posting so late in the day.

Okay thanks very much for the input, there is so much to learn but it is all great and fun stuff.
I have gotten a domain name and hosting figured out, just now at the point of needing to figure is it better to start with a free template site or go ahead and learn WP.

is it better to start with a free template site or go ahead and learn WP
In both cases there is a learning curve: learning and mastering HTML (and CSS if teh template has stylesheet) or learning and mastering WP.

And to answer your original question about WP resources: everything you need to know is already in the free online manual of WP - Main Page « WordPress Codex
I have never seen a book (print or ebook), video guide, whatever that was able to show anything new that is not in the Codex.

I admit, sometimes the Codex is difficult to navigate, sometimes is written by geeks (meaning, correct info but indigestible for us non-geeks) etc. So people will pay you if you can "extract" the info and present to them in an easy-to-understand form/style.
That is the only difference between the free and the paid WP resources.

    Thanks Istvan,
I have downloaded your free ebook that you offer and going through them now. there is such an information overload when new to the IM business world. I am starting with a simple landing page for now to just learn something but have a estore that i want to start next. Just want to start down the correct path.

Is the "artisteer " a good product?
is it used in conjunction with WP??

I agree that Google is source #1. The Wordpress.org Codex is source #2. And if you're looking to buy any books, there are 2 I recommend: Digging Into Wordpress and Become a Wordpress Rockstar.
