One of my shopping tenants called me today, excited to tell me about her "free" website deal. No upfront charge, $24 per month, two changes allowed per month, no contract. I looked at the site and it's basic but OK.

Obviously suspicious, I looked at WHOIS and sure enough, she does not own the domain. They do.

I would expect that if she wants to own the domain or change website management she's now going to have to pay up big, is that correct? Is that an industry practice or is it a scam?

Clearly she should have been more detailed, but like many mom and pops, she has no idea about websites or anything internet and didn't know to be suspicious.

What are her options other than paying the maintenance fee, knowing she's always a sitting duck? Thank you.

It is not new to us that there are lots of scams in the internet. All you have to do is to be very careful and investigate first before making any deals.

      OK, so confirmed scam.

Now, how do I pull her out of it and get her the domain name? Or, is that just not going to happen without some $$$?

I wont say its a scam but ignorance. A website for $24 seems too good to be true. Obviously it cost almost $10 to register a .com domain. How come they are able to deliver her a website for $24?? There is no upfront business. There has to be a catch and i guess the catch is, domain isnt not registered on her name and may be they would charge her annual hosting charges too.
