For those of you who design for local businesses, I have a question for you. How do you let your client edit the content themselves? I am not looking to be a webmaster, just a designer. I could build it on Thesis or something, but that has proven to be much more difficult than my old Html and Css.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

You could create templates in Dreamweaver, which can be customized to make only certain parts of the html code editable..........

We give an hour (or two depending on the price paid) of tuition as part of the package, we do the design taking in their specifications of course and then carry out tuition on how to use WordPress to add/edit content via Skype when all is finished.

Our clients can of course call on us again for more complicated changes or if they get stuck but they know that this then is charged at our hourly rate and we have a minimum charge of one hour.

We find this method works for us

@Sue: Thanks for your response! So it sounds like you are building your clients sites in wordpress?

My problem is that my clients obviously won't know html/css, which their sites are coded in. Is there any way for my to implement my html/css templates into wordpress easily?

Yes we design in WordPress and one of the reasons is so that we can leave our clients able to update their own sites and not be at the mercy of web designers/webmasters not being available.

It took me five minutes to answer because I was searching on YouTube for Evan's video to point you at and whilst doing that, Evan already posted it LOL

no problem, if you run into any problems feel free to ask.

In the mean time, read over this post , it will teach you almost everything you need to know to implement your html/css design into WordPress
        Convert HTML to WordPress

one thing to ignore on this page is creating the files yourself. your better off downloading a "blank theme" that you can build from.
        '
        good one is here

BLANK WordPress Theme | Digging into WordPress

        and here

        http://speckyboy.com/2010/03/22/10-b...r-development/

the blank themes, will give you all the WordPress code and get you functioning quickly ( implementing your themes ) Then as you become more familiar with word-press you can start getting into the WordPress specific code.

Yep, converting the sites to WP + company tutorials + hourly fee to do complicated stuff is one way.

As Susan, that's exactly what we do in my company. Works pretty well, and you'll have no problem converting the xhtml sites to WP.

Plus, with backoffice included you can get a higher price tag.

I don't charge anything, its included in the site ( allot less headaches for me when the client can make small changes them-self without having to call me to change one word.)

and makes the site a lot easier of a sell.

you can also use php includes. They work almost the same as the dreamweaver templates but don't require any extra software. The client would only have to write a plain text file with 2 extra lines of code in and name it .php. Not as convenient for the client as wordpress maybe, but it could turn out to be easier on you.

I just learned from an "offline guide" product that will be released tomorrow... you guys are leaving money on the table.
Why not have recurring income from selling a nice little 'site maintenance' monthly package?

I do which is an easy up-sell when you give the cms integration free.

most cases clients will make small alterations them self in WordPress, but any other changes that can't be made in the page editor they usually call.

Same, more or less as Evan for us too - we make the site, include some free training on how to use WordPress and after that, any further work is charged at our hourly rate with a minimum charge of one hour. I know that most of them do not have the time to do much updating at all but it does make it a much easier sell in the first place to be able to say "you will get free training so that YOU can update the site yourself"...

Not all my clients have the money to pay me for maintenance. Most of my clients are small businesses, not large companies or corporations. I would be willing to offer a package that includes maintenance, but need another option. I think I am going to end up learning how to incorporate my templates into wordpress, and do everything through WP now. Joomla/Drupal are options as well though. Any opinions on which CMS to use?

iZame: I wouldn't convert anything. The best way to do what you want for local clients is to buy the Elegant Theme package for $39. per year for each client in their name. You get 55+ themes. Then they get the theme support and support is not on you.

Plus with Elegant themes the users can change most of their theme even the colors from the options pages. You can alter the themes to your clients liking if you have the skill set.

In your agreement with your local client make a big deal of the support provided by Elegant Themes and be sure to explain that you will provide the initial setup and design stuff, then they take care of their own support through Elegant Themes.

You could do that with other themes such as Genesis and WooThemes. At upgrade time you won't have problems with these types of frameworks.

Going with Thesis just doesn't work for what you want to do and the upload options doesn't work from upgrade to upgrade so your clients will be calling you. Not good.

  • you know with tech today and search engines, most questions can be answered in 5 minutes of searching the web..

    as for your client issue...

if a client cant use ms word, then they will need to purchase a webmaster package : ) because thats all it is to use wp cms editor.

Wordpress is a good option but there are quite a few cms alternatives out there which depending on the project can deliver an easier to update experience then wordpress ever could.

I think what you need to keep in mind is the structure of most wordpress sites really dictates how easy it is to update.

By this i mean, once you start going into designs where you have different web pages with different layouts, you need to start updating the website via wordpress not just via post, but also through widdgets, custom fields and the like. As a result it can be difficult for customers to manage. But again this really depends on your design.

Basic rule of thumb i go by is, if it looks like a blog site, put it on wordpress - if it looks like a website, put it on something else - and 'something else' comes in a variety of flavors.

    The usual suspects:
    - Joomla
    - Drupal
    - Expression Engine

    Some light CMS options:
    - light cms
    - pagelime
    - surreal cms
    - cushy cms

NOTE: most light cms's are paid but for what you get on the dollar, value wise makes it well worth it (obviously depending on how many websites you have)

You missed probably the most powerful of all cms systems, that most overlook. ModX

I use to use it allot. But moved to WordPress as it is preferred by clients.

Drupal on the other hand I wouldn't use for anything In practice, it’s a nightmare to configure and maintain.

But for ease of use, easy learning curve etc etc WordPress is definitely the way to go.

to find out the bestr cms for what you need go here
      http://www.cmsmatrix.org/

select up to 10 at a time to compare , and see what they have vs your needs. but I would say WordPress will be the easiest for you to get into and work on unless you have knowledge in php, ruby etc etc.

Hes trying to learn how to convert html/css themes to WordPress ( or another cms).

you should really read the topic at hand before posting something, that really shouldn't have been posted even if it was a topic about installing WordPress, and a theme.

Not everyone is born with the god given talent to install WordPress and a theme ( at-least I didn't think so, if so I wasted 2 hours of my life 10 years ago learning it)

The OP could literally be installing WordPress for the first time, and your welcome to the party is, " you should know that ". And the best part is, your comment doesn't even apply to the original question. Either way, you should learn to cut people a little slack, they are not all as technically inclined as you.

Thanks for the useless comment, but no thanks......

but if you would like to help, feel free to post an actual awnser to his question instead of an insult. What would you recommended for a CMS? why? and could you please give steps on how to accomplish that....( without building a site with a run of the mill template that they got for free, that so many do.)

Dreamweaver and WordPress arn't the best mix. Besides you can learn html/css just as fast as you can learn where dream hides it all lol.

here is every html tag would will ever really need to know

        HTML Cheatsheet | Webmonkey*| Wired.com

and here is almost every css tag you will ever need

        CSS Cheat Sheet

you can literally learn the both of these in a few days if you read them all, and try then to see what each does.

think of it as being back in high-school, and you need to study for your exam
