Hi guys. I'm considering going to a VPS. Tell me what you think...

I have about 200 websites. I run a lot of cron jobs and my current web host (shared host) says I am going over the limit and often hitting the 100MB mark of RAM.

My problem... I've never used Linux. Should I look into a Linux VPS... or will a Windows VPS have mysql? Are there some other options I should be considering besides a VPS? It's going to be a lot of work making a move anywhere so I want to be sure and make the right choice.

Thanks for any advice.

If you're currently on a shared hosting account and you're using management software such as cPanel, you're not going to see much of a difference other than more customization options and better speed.

Linux VPS will host php based websites such as wordpress much faster than an equivalent Windows VPS. However, if you're using .net programming I would definitely go with a Windows VPS.

Once you purchase the VPS, most hosting companies will work with you to get everything setup. You don't have to be a genius when it comes to typing commands in a prompt. They'll do the work for you if you ask them. Once it's setup, it's basically just like a shared account.

    Thanks, Kyle.
Everything I do is php/mysql. That was kind of why I was worried about a Windows VPS. Seems the asp world is tied to MSSQL and php to MySQL so keeping my code on a Linux box (as it's currently hosted) might certainly be best for me.

You're probably right about the command line aspect of it. It would all be new to me.. but I've also been kind of thinking that it's probably just a matter of jumping in and learning those new commands.

The commands aren't hard, and a lot of the time you can avoid command line prompts by using an ftp client or the user control panel.

If you have a choice of which version of linux to use, I would definitely recommend centOS and look into installing Zend Optimizer. It can process php code very quickly with minimal server load.

Would not advise doing php in windows, its just way to hard to install all the extras (curl, xdebug, phpunit -xulrunner, etc etc etc). You "could" put mysql on windows, and you "could" put php on windows, but why? In linux its all bundled very nice, no hunting down support forumns on how someone got things to work under M$ windows.

What are you doing in your cron jobs thats eating all the ram?

    Hi guitarjosh,

Are you on cpanel? There are plenty of managed vps available on the market. If you have a limited knowledge about web server administration it would be a pain on your neck if you go VPS and you don't know how to manage it.

For managed VPS however, it's very much the same as your shared hosting (I'm assuming it's cpanel) but you have a lot more resources on your account. More administrative power as well (like restarting your virtual server, root access, etc).

You can try hostgator's vps service or you can look up mod vps (VPS Hosting from modVPS).

Linux is my recommendation, too. But maybe a good idea would be to get different shared hosting plans instead of a single VPS?

I advise against Linode unless you're very savvy with configuring Apache and such. If I were you, I'd get a web hosting with A Small Orange.

Thx all. I got my managed VPS today and installed my first site. With all the control panel options now, it doesn't seem to hard... though learning all the available options will definitely take some time! There's a ton! Looking forward to learning more though!
