Membership Plugins - Are there any that work?

I'm beginning to be convinced that there are no really good membership plugins out there. I've tried...

WP-Member - Support sucks. Unless you pay the extra $20, they is not even support to get it functioning. You would think that basic support to make sure your product is working even through a support ticket system would be free.

WishList Member - Support sucks. Awesome features. Thought it was great while I was setting it up until I got to the PayPal integration part. Support ticket system is slow. I think US Mail is better than a support ticket system. When a support ticket comes across where a site is NOT FUNCTIONING AT ALL, you would think that would get moved to a high priority support ticket. I've got members trying to access information they paid for a year ago and now the "easy license" fix (per WishList) is taken 4 support ticket conversations to get resolved. There are people on the WishList support forum (which you can't see until you purchase) that have been unsuccessful in getting support on integrating PayPal for almost 3 WEEKS! That's an absolute KILLER for someone trying to run a membership site.

The others are so overpriced I'm not sure what to do.

There... I feel better.

So far, I have tried a number of different Wordpress membership plugins, including wishlist, and I have not found one that is really all that it is "advertised" to be, there is a definite hole in the market, after a while I just gave up on finding one that really works out of the box without issues and poor quality support, as you mentioned, there really is not much out there,

So far the best membership options are standalone options.

I know a fair few people who think that wishlist is the best but I do not believe that and I can see you do not either, but all in all the end result is that so far, I have not seen a membership plugin that really ties it all up into one nice package, there are some that work for one aspect and others that work in other ways, but no real "no Brainer" plugins,

I've used and setup MagicMembers and it's really not bad. Integrates easily with PayPal and so on.

It's $97 a year - so not cheap - but you get what you pay for.

When it comes to membership sites, everyone has different preferences about how the site should work. Some people want subscribers to pay first before they can access anything. Others want subscribers to have some access privileges even before payment. Some people want to process payments with ClickBank -- others prefer PayPal or Authorize.Net. It's not easy accommodating all of these use-cases.

I think s2Member is taking an interesting approach to membership site plugins. They have a free version at WordPress.org which works with PayPal only and satisfies most common use-cases for membership sites. Then, if you want more, you can buy the Pro module, which is open-source, supports many more options and payment gateways and can easily be expanded by a hired WordPress developer because s2Member is pluggable (i.e. has API) and documented -- like WordPress itself.

Not sure if price is your only criteria.

If you want great software, great price (if you see how much is actually included), and great support, then do check out http://DigitalAccessPass.com

    Disclosure: I'm the founder/co-developer :-)

This experience makes me more careful to use all these plugins.

There's one called s2Member. It might be worth you checking it out and it's free (unless you want more than 4 membership levels)

It also lets you customize the admin login page. Some other features are, that it integrates with paypal, fully supports recurring billing, portions off content, lets you sell access to pages via a paypal button etc etc

I haven't read of anyone who hasn't got along with it. But there's always a first time

aMember is pretty well-regarded. It's $180 and includes a free WordPress plugin.

@msafi Interesting, what I would consider a no brainer, would be a product that allows the user to manage content, leaving the heavy lifting to the software, like payments, managing users, managing theft, and all the other issues that seem to accompany just about every product I have evaluated, to date.

@ kjhosein I have recently taken a look at this product, I have seen it used as a distribution point for several premium WP plugins, and themes, it is an impressive interface, but do you know if they have any development options?

Tim - yup, same here which is why I pointed it out. This seems like a pretty go-to option for many a site that I've seen. Not sure what you mean by development options though.

I have a couple clients on aMember and have been working with it since spring 2009.

As for development options, you get a localhost license on request with the purchase of a license.
They also have affiliate discounts. I don't remember how much, I don't really push it for affiliate profits. My profit is in the client with customizations, maintenance, etc....

If you want to do membership in or out of Wordpress you have to go and check out Digital Access Pass (I'm not the developer..lol).

Seriously, if you compare it to the other stuff out there and go feature by feature, it wins.
