Hi all, just a couple of quick questions. After losing my job due to health problems i have tried my hands at making money online and although i have had some success at this i'm not enjoying the work. The only part i do enjoy is the web design.

I dont have a lot of skills at this but have already bult some very simple websites for some friends, however what i really want to do is make it a career.

My questions are;

1. What skills would i need just to start off?

2. Is there any potential for a 25 year old to learn a new skill?

3. How to get work?

4. What software and programs are essental in the industry?

5. Whats the best way to learn more?

As i have said i do know a few basic things (HTML/XHTML) but would like to become skilled at what i do.

:confused:

    You sound like you have the basic skills to start off. I know people who create websites who have know knowledge of HTML even. They do everything using software like Dreamweaver.

    I have spent the last 7 months using a computer thats does not have enough RAM to run most software so i have been using pretty much nothing but notepad to create sites and its been the best thing i have ever done i have been learning new stuff every day.

    Getting website work can be hard to start off with. The best thing to do it keep doing work for friends and people you know also have a look on freelancer for web design work. Build up a good portfolio of your work, as people are wary of hiring a web designer with virtually no work.

    You will be judged by potential customers by the quality of your own website, so make sure its up to date and good quality.

    Every time you create a new website, try and teach yourself something new.

      The best thing you could do is get your feet wet by taking some community college courses on web designs. They'll teach you the fundamentals in a clear regimented way (which are the hardest things to get down when you're starting off.) You can then learn a lot yourself by making a deliberate effort to expand your skill set as you do some real work. There's no shortcut, but if you are passionate about it, you can accomplish a lot on a solid foundation of essential knowledge.
