Worried about all the Wordpress Ugrades?

Seems there is a new version of wordpress every second day.

* Should I be worried about upgrading to the lastest version of Wordpress?

* Will my current Theme crash if I upgrade?

* Is it wise to keep upgrading?

* Will my Data Base cope, even with backup?

* Is it absolutely neccessary to upgrade everytime?

I love WordPress, but these are some of my concerns.

Hoping to get your thoughts.

    Hello

You're probably best to upgrade whenever there is one available, as long as you take regular backups and take one before the upgrade your data is safe. Plugins are more likely to have problems than themes but it will more likely just stop working than crash your install.

I upgrade whenever one made available I also recommend my clients do the same, software upgrades are a bit like buses you can wait ages for one but then 3 come in quick succession. It's just how software development works, hope that helps

    Cheers

Its always safe to be updated. Some plugins might cause problems ( which is very rare ) especially if you are using a "not so popular" plugin. But I don't think there will be any problems if you upgrade.

And yes, as written above, always keep a backup.

There is a plugin which can automatically generate backups for you.

I upgraded and it caused such a mess, I ended up reinstalling WordPress from CPanel.

Keeping WP updated is the #1 hacker prevention method there is.

If an upgrade caused a mess, it's because your theme or a plugin hasn't been updated in a while. The thing to do is find the problem and fix it, not revert back to an earlier WP version.

It cann happen only when you are using theme and plugins that do not follow WordPress guidelines. Most of them sold as niche sites and money-making plugins fall in this category.

As the others have said, always keep your WordPress updated to the latest version.

That said, upgrades often can cause problems, most of which are caused by plugins. Even if the plugins you're using haven't caused problems with previous upgrades you cannot rely on them to not cause a problem with your next one (as several people upgrading to 3.1 found out!)

This article sets out a process for ensuring that if a plugin is going to cause a problem you'll know which one it is and be able to fix it:

    I second this.

Everybody and anybody can create a theme or plugin for wordpress but a lot of it is either poorly written to begin with or not supported for long.

Everybody loves FREE! but it's smart business to invest in professionally designed and supported themes and choose your plugins wisely.

If everything is in order, updating to the latest version of wordpress shouldn't be a problem. The updates are improvements.

Thanks to everyone for your valuable comments and feedback.

From what everyone is saying, it is wise to upgrade to every new WP version that comes out, providing I do a backup and continue to upgrade the plugins too.

I have'nt had any problems so far, but everytime I hit the Auto Upgrade Button I hold my breath!!

But, I stiil don't see why, if a site is working fine, why it is necessary to stuff around with it by continually doing upgrades? For me it's a pain in butt!

The MAIN reason is security. WP is a complicated piece of software, and hackers tend to focus on it. When a security vulnerability is uncovered, the core team issues an upgrade - which they don't do if they don't feel it's warranted. So if an upgrade is released, you can rest assured they're not just messing around with it.

The exception to the above explanation is full-version upgrades, say from 3.0 to 3.1. Those are feature releases (but also may have security upgrades included) and there is the possibility that upgrading may break your site if your plugins and theme are not compatible.

You should upgrade for security reasons. Thast normally why they have an upgrade and to fix bugs

Plugins may not be compatable with the latest upgrade but i've never experienced a problem.
