Redesigning my website

OK so I have a blog (sig) and I realized that I have been doing it all wrong. I was putting bland information in my blog instead of ideas and stuff, so now I am trying to redesign it and make static pages for the information and use the blog for my ideas and experiments and stuff. I like the zdnet.com layout, but I haven't found a WP theme that looks sort of like it. I don't want it to be exact or copy it, I just like their use of sliders, menu's and sidebars. I guess I am looking for a magazine like theme.

Should I even be using wordpress? I just use it because it is easy to setup, but now I am not so sure it will fit my needs.

In my experience, Wordpress is extremely powerful, BUT you need to take the time to understand what it can and what it can't do. Most of what you want in terms of sliders etc can be added to Wordpress using plugins - as long as you're working with a solid theme.

I would recommend avoiding the free themes and sticking with one of the commercially available themes such as Headway, Socrates, Thesis or Genesis. (Google them)

In terms of static pages, this is what Wordpress 'Pages' are for, and you can use the menus to create quite sophisticated navigation throughout your static pages. Then simply use the 'Posts' to manage your blog section. In fact, by adding menu items based around a post category, you can even have multiple blogs on your site!

    Hope that helps.

    Kind regards,
    -John.

Wordpress is an awesome platform and you can certainly find themes to look like zdnet.com. Everyone has their opinion but Wordpress sites are easy to update, you have a ton of themes (free or paid) to choose from and a ton of resources because millions of people use Wordpress.

You can customize a wordpress blog to look like a professional website. Gogle Wordpress Magazine Themes or WP Magazine Themes and you will find a ton. Good luck!

I agreee w jlandells wordpress is good i use it on all of my sites. However you have to find the essential plugins to have it running effeciantly. Once you have mastered that it becomes second nature and you can have a site up in no time.
