Is it possible to improve the looks of the password protect form done with cpanel?

I really don't like cpanel but have to do some things for a customer. The whole site is a members' area and the password protect is done by .htaccess. This does result in a plain form on a drab dark gray background. The password protect was just set up with the cpanel 'password protect a directory.'

I didn't give that a second thought but the guy is wondering if it can be made to look like one of those doorway enter pages to a site. Something with a bit of beauty and an 'enter here' link, but with the user name and password form instead of the enter here link.

Actually he has a good point. The site has slightly upper class users and improving impressions any way possible would be a good idea. If this is possible it would be nice to do even if I have to go with some other password protect, like php. Has anyone here messed around with this sort of quirky little problem?

I would change him over to wordpress. Your best bet is to install s2member. This way you have the plugin to protect the website and you can also change the login page to look like you want. This one plugin will build an entire membership site.

It is kind of long winded but it has lots of great features.

Thanks for the info loc. I wouldn't want to do it on this site because everything else is already taken care of without WP. I wouldn't want to install it just for this one little problem. But if I ever start putting up as many sites as you seem to be doing from your sig files, it might come in handy somewhere.

      best wishes

That box is a product of the browser - it looks different in every one. So no, you can't change it.

As far as using another kind of authentication, it all depends on what your site files are built on now. If they're plain vanilla HTML files, you can instruct your server to parse them for PHP, and then add authentication to each file.

This is a big job, though, if you have a lot of files.

Thanks for the info Steve, that sound like a clear answer to me. The pages are all php btw.
