I built this membership site for a small, local investment group.

REIA-IPOA Butler County

How much should I charge?

OK. Before I get bombarded with,"You should have determined that before
you built it" posts, I did it mostly as a favor for my sister-in-law and knew going in they have a small budget.

I just want to know what it would cost the general public.

I won't pay a penny for this design. Why?

    1. It's a free template which will suck link juice from my site.
    2. The top navigation bar is broken.
    3. Contact us page not functional.

    Sorry for being too critical.

I understand what you're saying. And, I never take offense at constructive criticism.
The site isn't complete. What you're seeing is the basic layout. Their contact info, and other content is yet to be decided by them.

But, my basic question is what would be a "ballpark" charge for building a membership site?

It does depend a bit on the features you are offering Membership sites can mean a whole lot of things, right? And if you are in offline biz, I guess it also depends on how savvy the client is

Assuming that you will tighten up the design so it's more professional (such as the Privacy Policy not being the second link the main nav bar but a small one in the footer, and a functional contact page, as pointed out before), I would guess that a one-level membership site that looks like what you have put together would start at $300 or so.

I suppose one would use a standard/premium WP plugin to setup the membership features (multi-tier, drip-feeding content, recurring payments, etc), and would factor that into the cost of the site, with a small profit margin. For the rest of the site, for the features/look you have, the typical cost at the lower end should be in the $200-$500 range (again, this is sans the membership feature).

    HTH!

Thanks for the input CopyGirl. Actually, $500 would be the most they could afford. I attended their meeting last night and showed them what I had and went over what they wanted to add.
They want something between this; REIA of Oakland
    and this: Cincinnati REIA

The second website example that you got is certainly classier/better than the first one. I am not sure how either of them compare to yours in terms of functionality, but off the bat I can say that yours might be a bit too picturesque and perhaps not the right look-n-feel for the intended audience.

$500 is not unreasonable for either party for a website like this, but again, I am saying this without too much thought about all the requirements.

If $500 is what they can pay, then $500 is what you can charge.

From my humble point of view $500 is totally unreasonable - at least for the way I would do it. But that's fodder for another discussion sometime. $500 isn't even a good chunk of a 50% deposit.
