Need some constructive feedback: Allyouneedislists.com

Howdy all!

I'm in need of some proper feedback on my website: All You Need Is Lists!. It's a site about everything and anything entertaining or informative, as long as it's written in "bite-sized chunks" (too bad bitesized.com and bitesizedchunks.com are already taken ).

Currently there are about 30 guest articles and I'm teaming up with some people who do regular publications on a certain subject.

The next step is conquering Youtube with awesome Video Lists, but that's future-talk.

I'm using Wordpress with the free Arras Theme and customized the hell out of it. I'm actually kind of pleased with the current result,

BUT

it seems the site loads incredibly slow and also jiggs a bit when scrolling up or down.

So, here's what I would like to know:

  1. what do you think of the site's concept (articles presented in bite-sized chunks)?
  2. what do you think of the site's speed (loading time, "scrollability")
  3. what do you think of the design
Thanks in advance!

I think the concept is good! It's definitely kind of a trend lately and I find it a good way to find nicely sorted information quickly. The load time seems just fine, it's not lightning quick, i think on average each page was taking between 1.5 - 2 seconds for me to load (Mac OS X 10.6.7 using Firefox). I really like the design. I think the site is very busy, but they layout and the flow definitely makes up for it 100%. Very clean, very neat structure; and I like the arrow button that pops up once you start scrolling down so you can get back to the top quickly. I'd say your site is a success!

cool! thanks very much for taking the time to look around!

I'm using Firefox 4 on OSX as well and I must say it runs best with this browser. When I open Safari though, it scrolls like hell!

I'm glad you noticed little details like that "back to top" button

    Thanks mate!

      Hi there!

Love your concept, it's fun and I want to read things because I know they will be quick. They're snippets I can read when I should be getting to something else, because they are short.

It seemed to load fine for me.

The design works in many ways because of the simplicity. I love the layout. The only thing that is confusing to me are the placement of your ads for Elegantthemes.com and Host Gator. I thought that they were part of your site, and didn't understand on a quick glance that they were ads. Can you distinguish them slightly from the content in the sidebar, the "Today's Trending Lists" and "Follow Us"? Can you put the ads in a widget sidebar with a slightly different background color so that I don't think they are part of your site? Or can you reduce the size of Elegantthemes.com at the top?

It would be cool to have a tagline. I'm not sure what you mean by "lists" at first. Grocery lists? ToDo lists? I'm not clear until I look down through the posts. Can you put a tagline underneath the title/logo to explain what this site is?

      My two cents.

      Chelsea

Thanks for your constructiveness Tech Diva! This is really helpful to me.

Good points on the ads, I will definitely make sure to have them visibly seperated from the rest.

I have been pondering on a name change, like Bitesized.com, but everything I could use has already been taken. Also, at the moment the site is growing steadily and I don't want to destroy my SERP rankings

Until the name change, I will make sure to add the "Everything in bite-sized chunks" tagline below the title

        Cheers!

The load time for me was fast. The design is ok, but the intent is not clear. There isn't a quick obvious call to action.

Make your call to action rollover as well and hover too. It will make it more visible. Make it a Web2.0 button

I'm using Chrome and it scrolls smoothly. Some suggestions:

    1. You need a better logo. Your current logo is not much readable.
    2. Maybe you're loading time is slow because you're using too much Javascript effects. for example, in the sidebar widgets, those effects on text-roll over can be stripped out. Instead use CSS3 for this. Same applies to your menu. (Correct me if I'm wrong)
    3. You add a "About the author" text piece after every post. Then whats the use of that author box after tags.
    4. Overall Design Looks good. Words are readable. Though you can get a better font.
    5. Make good use of your footer.

    Awesome tips, thanks!

@checkm8: what do you mean exactly? I know I should add a tagline ("Everything in bite-sized chunks") below the title, as Tech Diva suggested. This would make the "purpose" of the site a bit more clear.
Do you mean the title itself?

    @Deviatore:
    1. Yup! I'm thinking about a name-change which also makes the intent of the site more clear. Will create a proper logo then as well.
    2. Those fading effects are already done with CSS ("transition: all 0.1s ease"). I should remove some of those though.
    3. Those About the author thingies are for Guest Articles only. The Guest Article author box is used for something else there (I'm not going to create an account for each guest blogger, I would be having about 40 accounts already)
    4. Gonna try and tweak the font a bit, got some Google Fonts in mind.
    5. What do you propose?

Thanks again all! This is really helpful!

    Hi,

Sorry for the late feedback. I think your site is great. The only thing I don't like about the design is the purple color (esp. for the links). I think the design will look better if you use a color other than purple.

    Best of luck.

Thanks for your comment waleedfi! I'm actually thinking about making multiple color schemes. Either for visitors to choose from themselves, or maybe a fixed color scheme per category.

Any suggestions on use of colors?

      thanks for the compliment beck

At the base of the site is the great and free Arras Wordpress theme (Arras Theme - Magazine-Styled WordPress Theme), but all of the customization I did myself.

Of course there are some plugins that make my life easier, such as UberMenu (horizontal menu), a customized version of Wordpress Popular Posts (the "trending lists" widget in the sidebar) and so on.

If you'd like to submit a list, look for the Guest Blogging button in the main (Uber)Menu

      Cheers!
