My blog design was starting to get too busy and ugly, so I just spent the last couple of hours working on a new simpler design.

Um... this is a wrong statement. SEO for both will be the same because search engines don't care about CSS. The only changes that I've made are styling changes in CSS.

I'm a fan of 'less is more', which is probably why I like the new version. Clean, just the right amount of graphics, easy to read.

The new design is far better, the only problem is branding. If I were to stumble upon your website I would almost immediately click out due to it looking like every other IM blog. I would say to get rid of the add on the top and instead, make a very large and creative banner stating your site name and what it is about.

I agree. Branding is hard to establish and the banner is really just a place holder until I come up with something better. The theme needed to be fixed though and I wanted to make sure I liked the changes before spending time on a creative banner.

Thanks for the input on the top banner.

I like the second one much better. White websites are very in vogue these days, it seems.

I do agree with others in that I think it lacks solid branding and looks a little generic.

My gut instinct says to ditch the ad in the header, and instead of having a header with orange text and a white background, reverse it. Have a solid orange background for the header, and have your name/logo in white. I think that would help to anchor the page a little more (less floating white space) and give it personality.

Thanks for the input. My header is definitely the problem child right now, but I'm still playing around with ideas. At least I've improved on the vast majority of the design

Where did you get the content from? Also, you don't have the date on your posts, why?

I write the content myself and I don't have a date on my posts because I want the content to be timeless. The date might scare away some visitors.

My 2 cents - I like the old one better. My eyes flow around the page from one piece of content to the other, because of the blocks of color. When I look at the second site, I don't know where to start because it's all white and I would most likely click-off right away, since it looks generic.
