Hello, I am wondering whether it is better as far as conversion rate and user experience to have the social media icons at the top or the bottom of the web page. Thanks.

You can place it where you want, but as i tested many ways the best if you post an enervating but converting FIXED or FLOATING widget somewhere on your site sides.

Also i recommend that you only use for the inner pages of your site.

I can't imagine that having them at the bottom would do you any good

It works perfectly fine on content (article) sites.

I personally recommend at the bottom of your post or at the end of page.

This is because the person doesn't just come to your site and press any of the icons you have put for social bookmarking. They will only share if they feel it worth reading for others and that can only be at the end of the post.

I would say it depends on what the purpose of your web page and your social media sites are.

If your goal is to keep people on YOUR site and read your content and possibly make a sale, you don't want social media icons on the top of a page distracting them, or possibly causing them to click away from your site.

If you prefer to send people to your Social Media sites and follow you there, make them more visible at the top.

I would have to agree with VegasGreg. It really depends on what you are trying to achieve. If you are trying to promote the social icons, most people don't stay long enough to scroll to the bottom of the site.

Another things to note is what type of social icons - are they your main social icons for "you" or are they to announce your "pages and posts". To announce pages and posts on your site, you would not want these at the top as they could be distracting from the message you are trying to convey to begin with.

Based on your needs, either top or bottom could be better for the situation.

You can use the free WP FollowMe plugin to have a floating down either side of the page. You can choose from 16 different icons, choose background color and other settings.

i agree with rushgraphic and vagesgreg......

it depends on the goal of your site....If the goal of your site is centered around social networking, then i would place the icons near your "call to action" link.
If your goal is to centered around product sells, then i would place the icons in the footer so visitors don't get distracted....you only have a few moments to deliver your sites message before a visitor clicks away....so you have to design with a hierarchy of information.

If your social media profiles are important to your marketing campaigns, I would keep the icons at the top linking to your profiles.

  • At the top. That way people see them on your site right away. Sometimes people on your website may not get to the bottom ... so you gotta get them while you can.

My two cents. Most of the important elements of a website like optin form, social media areas and banners are usually shown above the fold.

  • Hey thanks a lot to you all! This is an example of how useful is to be part of the Warrior Forum. Often, for a simple question there isn't a unique answer and I simply learned a lot on a topic I hardly thought I could see it in a different way, silly me. In my blog I have the social bookmarking automatically at the bottom of a post. But, as I am building up my FB pages, I appreciate the advice of knowing where I want people to stay and what I want to achieve.

Floating widgets works a lot, you can have higher conversion with those. If that doesn't work for you, prefer placing them on top of the page, top right always works for me

i guess we need to distinguish here between two things:
1- Social MEdia icons that when people click them are redirected to your FB page or Twitter account.
1- Social Media icons that when people click them get a box containing a thumbnail of your article/web page and some description (in facebook) and a box with one line and a your article/web page link (in twitter)

in 2nd case it's better to have the icons at the end of the article post/ we page

in the 2st case i believe it's better to locate them in eye catchy place, like left-top of your home page/blog

but the question that came up to my mind here and i really do not know the best answer for it is,
if i am a big company, a telecom company lets say, and i want to locate SM icons at left-top to attract users to follow me on twitter and to like my FB page,, then which is better; to have the icons only on the home page or on home page and other internal pages??

    what do you think guys??

Why not have both and split test so you know how many clicks you get on each. You can do this using a link tracking plugin
