Overwhelmed by Wordpress theme options

Hi Warriors,
I have my URL, I have my host (rockin' Host the Name) and I have my service (professional writing services) that I want to offer while learning IM. I'm working for other Warriors to get my name out there and develop professional relationships.

My hang up?

I'm overwhelmed with all the Wordpress theme options. I'm literally stuck.

Please suggest your fave themes that meet these requirements:
1. Clean
2. Classic (not cheesy, that's not me )
3. Fitting for a writing site - my URL is RockStarWriting
4. Flexible to offer products and add blog posts.

I could use some help! Thank you!

We use OP (Optimizepress) and Thesis. They are both excellent.

Why not just use the built in TwentyTen Theme?

It does all of the above and more. It has a few different built in headers or you can easily upload your own to make it totally custom to you.

You can always change it later, but get started now and stop sweating the small things. Getting your site up and running is the most important thing.

The negative thing about TwentyTen is that all settings get reverted to default once you update your Wordpress version.

Better keep a backup of all the settings you change!

I would recommend the Notepad theme for what you are looking to accomplish. Good luck!

We use Studio Press themes. They are clean, easy to understand, inexpensive and bug free.

Clean and simple is my choice, I think the blog is for your professional site so you need to draw people attention to the content not to the flashy ads.

Simple also means simple to install, all I need for this kind of blog is seo and contact form plugin, and focus your energy and effort to the content. I think thesis would be overkill, I prefer woothemes or similar theme.

  • I stand by anything Woothemes. You get 3 themes for $70, so you could pick one for your writing site, and 2 different ones for your IM sites. They're always feature-rich, and they have a very active forum if you ever need any support.

OptimizePress is an awesome (non-Woo) theme, though. It has tons of options and features with it. But $97 is a bit expensive, imo.

For what it's worth...I think Thesis theme is highly over-rated.

As far as Wordpress is concerned it too is overly used on web sites that could be better served by a simpler CMS (Content Management System) like Concrete5, Simple CMS, or otherwise.

Wordpress was, and still is, primarily a blogging platform. If you are not going to be blogging as the main focus of your sight (and no, Google does not love blogs all the baloney said otherwise notwithstanding) there is no sense using a software like WordPress to try and get it to do what it was not designed to do. Manage the content of regular web site that is not primarily a blog.

      Just my two cents.

Is it best to purchase a W theme rather than using the free ones?

I'll add my 2c worth here. I like Atahualpa as it is totally customisable to almost any look you want. It's free, but there is a learning curve. Once you've mastered the theme options, the sky's your limit. I'm still learning.

I'm a huge fan of Woo Themes also, I just noticed from an e-mail promotion, this weekend they have a 5 for 1 sale. It's 70 dollars but you can use a theme for as many sites as you'd like. My favorite is Canvas, it has lots of options and is very SEO friendly. It took me an hour or so to learn the interface and I'm at the point where I can launch and customise a niche site in no time.
