FULL PARTNER vs. GOLD BAR vs. OTHER

A friend who is developing a membership site as part of her larger e-commerce business is considering what script to purchase. She will need an Affiliate Management program integrated into it, too.

She has her own dedicated server and has been advised to avoid mysql DB and Joomla because they have security issues.

She is being presented discussions of:

1. FULL PARTNER--what her advisers are primarily considering

2. GOLD BAR--

Does anyone know of the pros and cons of these 2 programs?

Is there any OTHER such program she should consider?

She will have her next conference call with her managers on Monday.

Thank you for any help.

Paul

Sounds much like your friend needs to NOT make any decisions right now....and go and do some serious homework.

If she doesn't , the project is going to end in tears.

She needs to define her requirements. Detail them out....

What does my user need to do with the site?
What do I need to do with the site?
What do my administrators need to do with the site?

then choose a package that will suit her needs. It requires research and work - which , by the vaugeness of your post and what she is being advised to do , most probably hasn't been done.

Avoiding MYSQL ? The single most solid security tight database in the world?...hmmm...
There are usually only security problems with MYSQL when you don't set the server up right. Yahoo uses MYSQL

Joomla 1.015 is rock solid , 1.5 is a little bit shaky at the moment - there are several bugs and breaches to be sorted out - I personally use 1.015 without problems , and I make backups just in case.

If you make a decision based on detailed , complete requirements , the decision then becomes a little easier and you can see through the mist of people trying to sell you things.

Worry about security when you have chosen your solution - A programmer should be able to make sure its fairly resistant to common hacks.

Even so , a site will never ever be bug free or totally secure , so its about risk management and disaster aversion.

Hope that helps - and I don't mean to be confrontational - its just she needs to hear that from someone....and noone else posted

    Cheers!

      Thank you, Lloyd.

She has probably defined it better than I have in my description, but she's trying to deal with several people who may not be as forthcoming as they should in her best interests.

Thats what the post sounded like...Surrounding yourself with sellers is a good recipe for confusion...

I am even not the best guy to give you advice - I sell this membership site script made from Joomla : Joomla! WSO :: NOW WITH VIDEO JUMPSTART TUTORIAL - so perhaps telling you that MYSQL and Joomla is biased on my part.

However , I know that thousands of people use it , including large entities , and they wouldn't if it was buggy and full of holes.

It sounds like this is quite a big company. In that case , a systems analyst would be able to assist you - he would help you follow a development methodology that would result in the greatest chance of success.

        Hope that helps
        Cheers!

IHOP uses Joomla, it can't be all that bad

Seriously, community Builder and their paid sub plugin are coming out of beta soon. I have checked them out and they will be heads above anything else around.....
