A friend of mine who has been pushing me to use Wordpress to make websites says he has over 50 sites up and running and he loves them.

BUT in the next breath he said because it is a free service if they ever lose your data, info, web set up etc they have no responsibility because it is free.

True or not ready debate

Are you talking about a wordpress.com site? Or wordpress on your own domain? If it is on your own domain there are tools to back it up. Not sure about wordpress.com

it is a not a big deal it is open source when it comes to risks, in fact I'd say it is the opposite it and it is SAFER *because* it is opensource

think about in the commercial world, what if the company goes bust? you're completely screwed with your closed source software

plus you're completely at the mercy of their charge rates

    all massive risks

in my mind the choice is easy:
    open source

You can build a website on Blogger or wordpress.com for free or you can build a wordpress site on your own domain. That will cost you a few bucks for the domain name and hosting. Not sure how many people go the free route as opposed to the paid route?

WordPress is free and Autmattic or Matt Mullenweg (the company and its founder) will take no responsibilty for how you use o misuse the platform. It's totally yours when you download and install it on your server. You are responsible for keeping backups and do what your website needs. WordPress has a strong community which can help you out of almost any situation, if any.

PS: You will never face a problem unless you break it yourself.

If you build a site on the Wordpress.com site, then Wordpress has the right to shut down your site for any reason at any point...it's not your site.

If you "install Wordpress" within your hosting on one of your domains and build a blog like that, then it's your site. No one can tell you what you can and can't do on your site. (Of course Google might not like it, but that's a whole other story:rolleyes
