1.purpose.
verily, this is the most important factor that makes up a website. For your site to be a highly regarded one,the purpose of the website must be well related to its content and every other related aspect.

2.Avoid false codes.
try as much as possible to use Html and Asp to create your web pages.Avoid using Java, XML, d html and others that require a surfer's browser to be set "correctly" in order to be viewed properly.

3.Make it load fast.
each and every page on your site should weigh at most 50-100kb in total, including graphics and navigation.interior pages can weigh larger but,the "front doors" to your site should weigh little.this is done so as your site visitors do not have to wait long to start interacting with your site.

4.Avoid sideways scrolls.
design your pages in such a way that they never force a visitor to scroll left or right no matter the resolution on their monitor.sites that read "best viewed at 1024*768" really say " look at it my way because i don't care about your preferences.

5.Stay consistent.
include a standard navigation structure on every page.though it may mean a serious task for the designer, but users should only need to click once to find every major section of a site.this includes using standard link colours in all text links.Blue;hyperlink; purple;visited hyperlink;red active hyperlink

6.Stay connected.
when i say stay connected,i mean two things.
i.stay connected to the web-in the sense that your should not allow your site to expire.if you do,your sit visitors would loose interest in your site.
ii.try as much as possible to exchange links with other sites for this would boost your site traffic and also increase your chances of being found on search engines.

with this rules, one would find himself running a stunning, well trafficked and profitable website. God bless.

I would also add, make it readable, create an easy to use navigation. Test the site in different browsers and popular mobile devices.

      Thanks for the great post.

I have many sites and it can be easy to overlook or forget these
      key aspects.

May I add, keep the site visually simple (personally keeps me on a page longer).

Don't forget user accessibility!!!!! This is why you want to make sure there are no code errors or that the site isn't huge on graphics (or flash), and if it is there must be alternatives. I see so many sites with image sliders, yet if one person has javascript off then it throws the whole page off, because they don't have a backup solution. This is what separates good sites from the best!

edit: also, not all browsers render PNG images. Not everyone has a monitor at least 1024 wide. Some have HUGE monitors, some still are at 800 wide. Having a fluid or even elastic layout is also something that few people now a days take into consideration.
