Best Way To Set Up A Test Domain

I'm going to redesign my site. I use wordpress, and typically I use thesis. However, the site I'm going to redesign is currently not using thesis. I want to convert it to thesis, using an existing site as a start.

What I'd like to do is take all the content from current site, copy it to a new domain (with all the categories/URL structure in place), change it to thesis, make my design changes, then put the whole thing back together so to speak.

Is there a simple non-techie way to do this?

Well design your new theme for wordpress and just install it. When you want to test it, just enable it and disable it when you are done testing. I don't really see the need to setup a test domain just for design.

hmmm... I'm a little confused. If I install thesis but don't enable it, I'm not sure how to modify it to get it ready for use. I'm off to experiment though. If I can figure that out it will awesome!

I am not sure what you mean by modify it but Thesis comes with a lot of customization option at backend when you login as admin. So you can install Thesis, enable it, make changes to the options, see the changes on your website as you make changes.

If you are not happy with the work, just change the default theme at backend and you can resume later on.

Yeah, that was my original plan, but I'm a little worried about doing this while the site is live. It will take me a couple hours. It's not like I get tons of traffic, but things will be changing every couple minutes. I'll probably just go that route, was just trying to do it the "right way" but like I said, not that big a deal.

    You can do this..

Create a subdomain...test.domain.com..or whatever name you like..

Install Wordpress, turn on privacy...from Settings....

Export the content from the live site and import it into the test site.

    Install thesis...

Do whatever modifications you want to do..

Transfer over everything to the main domain.

    Hope this helps...

yes that what you can do is
redesign it and point to other domain first before point to the main domain.
If your main domain stay in construction or 404, i believe that you will lose lot of traffic. So you need to make sure that your design is ready to replace to old one.
