I have a forum with registered members

who never come back after the first visit.

Even the ones that come back make posts

that are not relevant to issues of the forum.

Am confused and i don't know what to do.

Please advise me on what to do to keep the

forum active and lively.

If you care, you can see for your self

    Hi,
You should ban the users and delete their posts as well. To prevent spam you should setup some features like not post url until 50 post count or two weeks old etc.

    Thanks

You are using simple machines forum. Change your settings to have members be approved by you before they can post. That will eliminate the spammers. Find the SMF discussion board, the topics will be covered there and you will learn how to change the settings where registrations must be approved before members can post.

wfcheapseo posted good information too. Get into your control panel and learn how to delete threads and posts.

It will take some time to read through the SMF forum, but it will be time well spent.

I wish you the best. Lori

it is a forum full of spam and you should not visit that forum because it is of no use other than spamming or if it is of high PR

those members are spam bots, might as well delete them as they will bottle neck your forum

Instead of quitting, add a captcha to your forum, to slow down the bots.

CAPTCHAs are useless to bots like Xrumer - it automatically creates accounts, deciphers captchas, does whatever the user tells it to do. Very powerful bhseo software, and a nightmare for forum owners.

Go to simple machines forum website.
Click on "Community". It is a forum similar to this one and you can search for the problem you are trying to correct.

    One way to remove spam:
    Get on your control panel.
    Click Admin
    Then Forum maintenance
    Then remove old posts

Since all your posts are spam, I would delete all of them.

You can also select to delete a user, delete all posts made by that user.

To change your settings to approve people before they post:
    In your control panel:
    Admin
    Member
    Registrations
    Settings
"Method of registration employed for new members" change to "Approval"

You should have emails from the people who registered. For the members who are real members (not spammers) you can send them a personal email, apologize for the inconvenience of the spammers on the forum and welcome them back.

The captcha is a free service. Go to captcha.net and follow the instructions to get an html code. Copy the code and paste it into your forum. You do not need to know how to read the script. If you have never seen script before, don't let that stop you for adding the captcha, it doesn't matter if you know what it means. When you copy the code, paste it in a note pad or word pad. If you post it in word, some of the characters may not appear in the correct format. If you are not sure where or how to post the captcha in the smf, go to the smf discussion, community and type in captcha. No doubt someone else has asked that question on the board and you can follow the instructions.

The post by Lori and others pretty much covers everything you need to know.
As for getting back the members, that's not so easy.

A few years back I started a smf powered forum which was very niche (people born in the UK who had moved to brittany in France) I setup dozens of accounts and started in effect chatting to myself. After a month, people started to sign up and it eventually became a thriving forum.
