If you are using PSD files then you really do need Photoshop. I use CS5 but an earlier version would work just as well for these tasks.

There are PSD import plugins for programs like paint.net etc but, AFAIK, none of them support editable text layers - They all rasterize the text on import (and after editing new text in fact!)

It's also worth pointing out that if you are using Fireworks PNG's then the only way to edit the text on them is to actually use Fireworks - The "Fireworks PNG" format is different to the standard PNG in that it has additional meta-data for the layers. If you load a "Fireworks PNG" into another program all you will get is the top rasterized layer.

Thought I would mention this in case you are trying to edit "Fireworks PNG's" and not PSD's

CS5 is a great piece of software BUT it is *very* expensive! It might be worth downloading the free trial of "Photoshop Elements" at this link :

Don't Use CS3 or earlier. Cs4 came with Huge Changes and a bundle of awesome new features. If you will be Using CS3, you may lack in some actions.

That's quite true about the CS4+ changes but if all the OP want's to do is, basically, edit PSD text layers etc in PLR graphics then CS3 (or earlier) would probably do the job just fine.

if you are on a budget, I think using an older version of photoshop will be fine for you. Definitely don't go older than CS3. Ebay is always a good place to buy older versions of software.

CS 3 is easier to use, and I was annoyed when I switched to CS4 about the slightly different interface, but once I got used to it, there was no going back.

If you want to save some money, look on ebay for a CS4. IT is a LOT cheaper.

Of course, the latest version of Photoshop, which is CS5, has new features compared to previous version. But for what you need, you could easily do with a previous version.

If you can't *get* it from the Internet, you can just use the trial version on their site (it's CS5, if you need previous trial versions, you can find on Google).

To be honest, for the features you seem to need then a whole host of other software would do the job for you (free of charge) BUT for one CRITICAL thing! Editing PSD Text! That's the real problem. However, don't discount Fireworks as a possible replacement for Photoshop. I use both products (CS5) and, for web graphics, find myself using Fireworks more often than PS as it is simpler and is very web orientated. It can also edit PSD Text layers as well of course.

I have worked with Photoshop elements 7.0 and its ok, but if you really want a professional finish I would go with CS3 as I think there isn't alot of difference between that and CS4 and CS5. good luck.

its goes on personal choice and what you are more at home with or like.

myself i own both cs4 and cs5 and i prefer cs4, last time i used cs5 it was quite buggy although it was when it first came out and my work wanted to upgrade to the latest version. i managed to persuade them to wait a while.

i might try again with updates see if its changed.

Get the 30 day trial of FireworksCS5 , and then import PSD files, you can edit everything and keep the layers, and change the text. Fireworks CS5 is WAY easier than Photoshop. Good luck!

If you are just starting to learn Photoshop then I recommend CS3 so that you will be able to familiarize yourself with the interface, however if you are already familiar on where things are in Photoshop CS5 is your best bet.

CS4 is what I use however if this would be the first time that you would be using PS, I do suggest to give the 30 day trial version first for you to have a feel of the software first.

I have used Photoshop 8, CS3, CS4, and CS5. I would highly suggest CS4 & CS5. Download the trial and see how you like it. It's so packed with features, it can be a little overwhelming at first. There are tons of keyboard shortcuts that once you learn, will make working within Photoshop SO much better. Once you download the trial, try looking up a list of the hotkeys. Best of luck!

You can get these softwares at academic prices very cheap I bought production studio for $300 All it takes is showing some kind of proof that you are either a student or a teacher or some how associated with a school. Do you have a friend who is in school hen get them to help you. I bought mine from Academic SuperStore In fact I'm fixing to buy a new copy of cs5 for $349 It comes with all this. If you're going to buy an overpriced genuine copy of Photoshop with no background experience in using the software just to re-brand PLR, you're throwing your money away.

A much smarter option would be to pay an experienced Photoshop user a fraction of that money to re-brand it for you. I'm not even sure Photoshop is what you want. Illustrator might suit your needs better.

Photoshop CS2 is much simpler than CS5 and often gives the same results. Of course CS5 is more difficult and if you know how to use it you may create mirrors
