Maybe a Really Stupid Question

I have a feeling there is a better way than how my website developers are currently handling clients that already have a website and we are building a new website using WordPress and our own proprietary theme and plugin configuration.

Let me ask the stupid question.

When a client already has a website, lets say at www.clients-domain.com, what is the simplest way to build the new website out completely and be able to demonstrate all features and then once approved, provision at www.clients-domain.com?

Thank you in advance.

    Evie,

We always for each client create a staging site www.my-domain.com/clients/client1, www.my-domain.com/clients/client2, etc...

Then while developing or updating things the client can go to the staging area and see what has been done, adjust it, etc... then when they sign off we go live with it. So my company literally has 100 live mySql databases under our domain as staging environments and development platforms for my clients. I'm hoping that makes sense and helps you out.

BTW for my larger clients I actually create a subdomain for them for instance client1.my-company.com which makes them feel even more special

i guess it depends on whether you are building the demo site on their server or on your own

if it is their server then clients-domain.com/test is fine or if it's on your server then client.my-domain.com is probably easier, then you can just move the database over once they approve it

Fred, Asimov - thanks for your input.

I was thinking I would have gotten more input.

I guess you both are my princes.

    :-)

What my web dev team currently does is build the site on a development server, then once approved by the client, they tar it all up and move it to the server with their domain and re-provision it.

Seems like a lot of unnecessary work if you ask me but all 5 of them are saying the same thing.

My hubby works as an engineer for Google Irvine and he said he'd write a script to automate the entire process.

We already have something Marc Andreessen created (kind of like his Opsware) that allows us to update all of our clients sites (and the servers they are on) at once, including updating all plugins, databases, security patches, etc., etc. across unlimited servers.

We are currently building approximately 80-100 sites a day and I think that will save our dev group a lot of headaches as we continue to grow.

This whole cloud thingy though, has my head spinning.

When I am with my geek-boys, as excited as they are about it, I pretend I am too and that I get what they are talking about.

    ;-)

I always like running through my servers first because I control them. Then, when and if I move them to the client I know it is their issue. 80-100 Sites a day though that gets a bit crazy I'd imagine we do about that in a year

    hi Evie,

when i develop websites for clients i always create a sub-domain, this makes them special.
when i do it i always update the robot.txt file which helps me to avoid the subdomains to get indexed by search engines.

i use wordpress / drupal as the cms based on their requirements.
