Hi all, I am looking at building a large authority site. So far I have only built wordpress mini sites. I am not at all competent at coding etc so I would prefer to use wordpress.

Could anyone recommened a wordpress theme that would suit this type of site? I am worried as more and more content is added the standard theme menus will start to look very cluttered.

Thanks

I think SmashingMagazine is an example you can follow.

No offense but if you're talking about a large website you would want a custom made CMS. You can have one created for you at a decent cost and any respectable company would offer their support for a very decent price . In this way you could focus on the business rather then on the technical details .

Depending on the size you wish to achieve you can implement a native code solution that could scale way faster then anything coded in PHP or ASP .NET . If you want more info PM me and we could chat over Skype .

    hi SAmarket,

if you are planning to develop a large website then you will have to choose a good cms. i can recommend drupal as many big websites like ubuntu.com are built on it.

but you will have to keep in mind that building a large website has many additional monthly costs like website maintenance, servers, backup servers etc.

you should prepare a proper blueprint before developing a large authority website. to make it as an authority website your upfront cost is something which you should keep in mind.

I think you need something like "Arras theme". It's very flexibly.

      Thanks for all the replies.

I want to build a large site in the tourism niche. I have read that a lot more thought and planning is needed for a site that one day could have thousands of articles/pages vs your standard Amazon niche site.

I have some ideas from your replies and will spend some time looking at the best way forward. Whether I get a custom CMS coded (which will cost a bit) or look at other ways to build the site.

Would a package like X-Site Pro be an option? I tried Dreamweaver when I started IM but it drove me nuts! I think the learning curve was too steep for a beginner!
