This should open a real can of worms!

Meta Tags. How important are they?

I hear Title=Important, Description=Kind of Important, Keywords=Not that important anymore.

What's the REAL story? Or, does anyone really know?

If you think that what is displayed as your description in a search engine result is only 'kind of important' I would re-evaluate if I were you

Your meta 'title' is what ends up as the clickable link in the se's, so yea, that is quite important, as well as your meta 'description' that is displayed after your title.

In short, yes, the first two meta tags you describe are very important, as for the keyword tag, well I'm not sure... let that can of worms open...

    Jared,

My feeling was that all 3 are important, but I keep seeing people claiming that #3 (keywords) is just about worthless anymore. That the Title and the Description are most important

I DO agree with the fact that the description is more than "kind of" important.

    Pete,

I've also heard that #3, Keywords tag is not that relevant anymore, due to the fact that SE's are getting smarter, and they scour the actual website content, compared to relying on a keyword stuffed meta tag that does not reflect RELEVANT CONTENT that is on the actual page.

Anyone else have any insight on this subject?

I too have been hearing a lot about meta tags an posted a simular thread last week.
      http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...hese-days.html
Maybe there is some info in there that may help....I'm still confused...lol
I see sites that don't seem to have meta tags at all, but have somekind of "file or script" in place between the <head></head>....is it possible to hide a meta tag like this, in a file so it would be read by search engines but unseen by others...who might want to steal keywords?
I'll try to re-locate some of those sites so you can see what i am talking about.
The info I received in my other thread was conflicting.

Quite different topic altogether, but as for dofollow tags, they are great if you are posting your link at a 'dofollow' site, but if you have affiliate links from your site I would suggest you set your a href attribute to your affiliate links as rel=nofollow.

By doing this, you don't 'leak' your pr to other sites that are simply your affiliate promotions.

It's a great idea to set your affiliate links to rel=nofollow if you want to do proper SEO.

If you had to get rid of one of them, it would be the keyword meta tag.

It's taken so much abuse over the years, that LSI keywords on your page became much more important..

It's not BAD to have keywords in there, but the other two ARE MUCH more important.

    Peace

p.s. This question really shouldn't be in this section of the forum.. should be in web design or somethin... jus' sayin'
