Well being a newbie I was trying to figure out how to do some redirects to my site. I was unable to figure it out and so looked to outsource it. I went to fiverr.com and found someone. In private message before purchase i gave them my ftp username and password yesterday. it wasn't until today that I realized that I just gave a complete random stranger the keys to the castle.

I have changed my password.

What is the likelihood that I have been or will be hacked?

Since you have now changed the username and password you are probably safe from future hacking.

Was the username and password you gave them also used by your CPanel (or similar control panel)? If so they could have possibly used this access to create additional accounts. Otherwise just make sure they didn't add any files or directories that were not part of the work they did for you.

If you are going to outsource technical work it is inevitable that you will need to give some access information to the individual you have hired. Play it safe:

1 - Always have a full backup before giving anyone access, this will also protect you if the person you hire does shoddy work or accidentally damages something.

2 - Create a new temporary account - FTP, WordPress or CMS login, database access etc. Don't assign more privileges than are necessary to complete the job.

3 - Try and hire someone who comes recommended - Fivver may not be the best place to find someone (although there may indeed be some honest & capable workers on there). This forum is a good place to look.
