That's it after 3 years of toying around with dreamweaver im giving up onit and turning in my DW card, lol.

When it works it's great, it gets the job done and for me the learning curve wasn't to difficult...

But thats when it works.

most of the time i get random error messages when i try to save, or the css file is remote so i cant edit it within dreamweaver, or some other random bs. and lets not talk about that crappy visual editor..OMG.

So guys i just want to know what alternatives do you use to dreamweaver, no matter the price just list what you use and why you prefer it over dreamweaver.

here is what i specifically would like.

1. a program that allows code/design split view
2. works with html and css files not some proprietary file type
3. something that simply lets me change various things on my page such as the background color, without giving me a hard time.

hopefully we can get a good list going here..

SAVE THE WORLD FROM DREAMWEAVER, EVENTUALLY IT WILL GRAB YOU AND CONSUME YOU AS WELL AS YOUR TIME....be afraid!!

  • Lol. Dreamweaver isn't that terrible. Have you checked out artisteer? It is a web designers HEAVEN! So easy to do, no coding needed. It is so easy to change background color, add pictures, effects, custom header, i mean everything! Also its easy to make fanpages with it. You can make wordpress, blogger, and other designs. Plus Google loves wordpress and the seo is so simple. I stopped trying to create css/html sites. That being said, I still have to use dreamweaver for my web design class. Artisteer has saved me from many headaches and I use it every single day hope that helps.

    Rich,

    Two questions:

Which version of dreamweaver you are using? (check out the latest one, as a free trial, you might be pleasantly suprised)

Second, which part of dreamweaver do you use the most, code or design?

Many people expect dreamweaver to act like Microsoft word. They expect it to be simple, easy, and intuitive, unfortunatelly, dreamweaver was written with pro-developer in mind.

It is a VERY powerful tool and often mis-used.

    If you do most of your work in "Design" tab, you're in the wrong program;

There is a reason Adobe has Fireworks (and Photoshop). You should be doing ALL your design in these application. Yes, I do understand Fireworks and Photoshop are expensive and cost as much as a used car. But those are the tools for graphic design.

In Dreamweaver you should be primarily coding. All your colors, layouts, and other appearance factors should be defined by CSS. Your HTML should be clean and crisp. Almost no tables for layout purposes. None of the "<strong>" or "<i>" tags should be in HTML file. Your styles should not be set as style="xx" at the element level, but should be set through classes and ids in your stylesheet file.

BUT NOT EVERYONE wants to learn how to code properly, and our browsers have been nice to amateur coders, allowing unclosed tags, mis-nested (yes, i said mis-nested) html tags.

What you are struggling here is not Dreamweaver, but the way you want Dreamweaver to act, when it's not supposed to act that way.

All files must be "checked out", including dependencies. You should "check in" when done. The reason dreamweaver gives you "design" tab, is to locally preview how your page looks, not to design the look and feel of the page.

Just some inner-game thoughts for you.

i use cs5.5, ivee been using dream weaver since cs3. i use code mode. but i like to have it in split mode so that i can see the effects of the code changes immediately. but i never use the design tab to design. lol i tried that when i first purchased cs3, EPIC FAIL!
