Is it possible to take graphics from one theme but keep framework of another?

Hi guys,

Was just wondering - I bought an all-in-one WP theme that has tons of features straight out the box. So, so handy but I just don't like any of the colour schemes/skins that it comes with.

Is it at all possible to take the graphical elements of another theme and add them to my current theme? All whilst making these new graphics work with the functions of the current theme?

How easy/difficult would this be? I'm not talking a few graphics here and there, I'm talking a major overhaul of the look of the site.

Just wanna get some idea's

Thanks in advance guys (wish I could get this perfectionist head off my shoulders - Slows me down!!)

It can be done, no doubt about that.

To be on the safe side, I'd contact the original theme owner, asking if it's ok if you do so, maybe offering a link in the bottom of the website.

    Thanks Tomos,

Yeah that goes without saying - But say the original theme has features in the WP dashboard such as customisable (spelling? lol) widths for the seperate columns, its own "featured posts" plugin etc - Would any of these features clash with the new graphics or have problems working properly?

I'm guessing not because it's only graphics that are changing at the end of the day, right? Just to be sure.

    Thanks a bunch

    Altug,

There should be no conflict between your graphics and your plugins/widgets. In most cases one has nothing to do with the other. Note the qualifier "should be no" there is no way to be 100% sure without knowing exactly which plugins/widgets you are using.

With that said, if you are changing the size of the columns you may need to tweak the graphics you are adding to make them fit seamlessly with the theme. Very simple process.

Also, I find the easy way to insert new graphics into an existing theme is to change the name of the new graphics to the same name of the existing graphic each is replacing. That way you can avoid messing with the css and, in some cases, the html of the theme. Be sure to change the name of the existing graphic too. That way you don't overwrite on upload and they are still available to you on your server in case you want to stick them back in for some reason.

    Good Luck,
    Gene

If you want to be on the safe side just email the developer and ask for a custom job. It is the easiest and it will get you the best results. If you go DIY way, the easiest is as suggested above- replace the images in the images folder with the same sized ones.
Or you could edit the images - for the best results use the source files - virtually every decent theme nowadays has source files included. If not, you can change colors easily and with good results on existing files also.
