Hi I am working on a website doing their SEO content and linking etc, how long before the Search Engines like Google usually start improving the ranking (once I do my job!)

    This depends on the keywords that you are trying to rank for.

    It can be a week or so to see huge jumps in ranking if you have a non-competitive keywords, or months if you have a competitive keyword.

    you should start to see some changes within a few days though if you are doing your backlinking and onsite SEO correctly.

    If you are targeting a specific geographical area, you should see good rankings pretty quickly.
    I made a website for some clients of mine and within a couple of weeks they were on page one for 'decorating cheshire', and in positions 1, 2, 3 and 4!
    Obviously these are long tail keywords but it's best to start targeting these to begin with so your website is getting good search engine results whilst waiting for your site to move up the rankings slowly with more competitive keywords.
