What do web designers think of web video?

I had a client recently who said their designers wouldn't put on into the design because it would slow the site down! This might have been the case a few years ago but not currently - you only have to look at YouTube.

Generally all I'd ever do is just upload the video on Youtube and then embed it into the site. That way you know you're going to have quick streaming content, and it's not going to cost you a fortune paying for the bandwidth

That certainly was the case YEARS ago, but now there are many services besides youtube where this is not a problem.

      Vzaar
      Vimeo

Just to name a few. So I do not have any problems with video, in face, I would prefer websites with video.

      My 2 cents.

It really depends on what kind of website it is. If it is a corporate site, having embedded youtube videos may seem a little too informal. However, in the same situation for an entertainment website, it will be fine.

I really like what you said here. On more "professional" sites, I try to stay away from using youtube. When you're trying to sell a product/service, you don't want to send them to everyone else's videos as well. (Related Videos) It is possible to disable controls and related videos, but the video always has to link back to Youtube.

As far as my opinion on videos, I say they're useful. Most users these days prefer watching videos rather than reading. There are some sites that tend to go overboard. So, my advice, just don't over-do it. 1-2 videos should be enough to cover what you need.(hopefully)

Why would it slow down the website? Embed the video, have it on pause when the website loads and as soon as the user clicks play, it starts streaming. That way nothing is slow when loading the website.

I personally find that adding video enhances my content. Many visitors enjoy video. It does depend on your audience, of course, but adding in a video usually has more benefits than drawbacks when it comes to user experience. I sometimes think the fancy flash intros & menu effects are more likely to bog down a site than video.
