Hi, I usually outsource website creation for my marketing. I use wordpress for simple affiliate sites. However, for my offline business I am trying to gather whether I can save on the costs of outsourcing by producing sites based off of html templates from sites like themeforest.

What level of knowledge is required and software to edit ready made templates from sites like themeforest?

I am not looking to create fully fledged advanced websites, but rather edit and modify templates which would save me costs if it is at all possible for me to do it alone.

Your help would be very much apprecited folks.

Exactly the same level as you'd need to start it from scratch. Or more... because you have not only to be able to read the code but to understand the 'logic' behind the original creator's thinking, too.

I am fluent in (X)HTML/CSS and I hate to modify other people's code.

      I couldn't agree more!

The hardest thing in the devemopment world is to modify someone else's code; especially if the code was not designed elequently.

Some times you can look at someone else's code and it is like walking outside on a lovey Spring day. The code is brilliant, clear, easy to understand and modify; you say to yourself: this is exactly how I would have done it.

Then there are times when you look at code and your brain starts to hemmorage or melt. You'd rather be anywhere on the planet (including prison) than where you are sitting.

Be thankful that you don't ever have to wade through the gobbledygook from Microsoft's old BASICA with the completly horrid GOTO's

Best advice I can give you is get a little knowledge under your belt at W3C schools and especially to go Zen Garden a fantastic place to learn and understand about CSS.

It really matters on the edits. If it's something simple, like just adding text or 1 or 2 images, then a basic understanding should be fine. If you are really changing the template, then I agree with Istvan. You don't really need any software, but a basic WYSIWYG editor should do the trick.

text edits should be simple - you can just use Kompozer and have the advantage of the WYSIWIG editor interface if you prefer. The question though is really are you saving by doing the work yourself? There's so many people/places where you can outsource this work and perhaps concentrate on bringing in more offline clients rather than doing the grunt work yourself. Just my 2 cents

First open the files and look whats inside there. If you don't understand anything, there are thousand tutorials on the internet for that.

But before you think about the knowledge, the interest to learn should come first !

It is not difficult at all, If you already know a little bit about html and css you can modify the html page. If you only need to change texts and images open the html files with a text editor but if you need to change more things like animations or javascript then go watch some tutorials.
