Advice on changing my URL

Not sure if this is the right forum to post this in but here it goes.

I was thinking about changing my website's url. Originally it was for a specific product on a static website (minisite). I changed to wordpress maybe a year ago, don't remember. I recently just changed the theme too. I have the domain that of the title on my website and what is in my signature.

My questions are? Would it be smart to change my url? I don't want to lose page 1 ranking.

How do you change your entire site? Is it as easy as just transferring the files to your new url file?

A little confused here. But don't believe the current url is relevant any longer.

Thanks for any help and direction.

Pat

That seems to be a correct assessment...

Changing URL and/or changing domain (aka moving the site to a different domain) are very different issues.

Unless you clarify what exactly you want to do - it's hard to give any advice.

I wouldn't move the site to a different domain name as you have lots of pages to redirect. If you want the title to be different, just change the title meta tag and the title in your header. If you want to advertise your site with a different domain name (like in your signature) you could get a new domain name and forward it within the domain registrar to the existing site.

Istvan you are correct I must not be explaining it correctly. Here goes.

I guess I want to change my domain name. And transfer all files to the new domain.

Example: my website is: homewarrantysecretsexposed (dot) com (not really but just an example).

I would like it to be: homewarranty101 (dot) com

My primary keywords are the first two words of my domain name. I just thought shortening the domain to one I own too would just look better.

And yes Chris my concern is all the files I would have to go through and change.

I guess redirecting actually sounds like the way to go.

The original domain was set up to be a minisite selling a specific product and I have redesigned the site via wordpress and with more information.

I just didn't know if there was an easy way to do this or if it would be wise.

Thanks for the responses and any advice is always greatly appreciated.

So, you want to replace the domain name of your current site with New domain name right? And you are concerned about transferring all your current files to New domain name?

I have also worked at web hosting company before and here are the possible ways you could do. Mainly, it is called domain swapping and it does not require you to transfer your files.
Register a new domain then you want:
Current domain= replace by New domain so
New domain will carry the hosting of current domain so its webfiles will remain meaning you will not have to literally transfer the files.

    Steps to make:
    1. Call the company that currently holds your domain and hosting
    2. Tell them what you want to happen.
3.They will suggest you to register the NEW Domain name
    4. New domain name should be registered as Domain parking (without hosting)
    5. Once registered, asked the company to replace the current domain by the New domain.
    6. You will just wait until the process is done.

The RESULT: New domain will hold the information of your current site. The old domain will become a domain parking where you can add new hosting and make a separate site.

    My opinion:
You should start new project - same site with new URL.
At the same time you should save your old site. It can help you to advertise your new site.
Some links can move visitor on the new site.
After some time you will be able to close old site and work only with new.

    Good Luck!

That is also a good idea or option but it entails a lot of work, time and money as you will be recreating from scratch. I would say, domain swapping is less hassle and your hosting company can do it for you in no time. You can still save your old domain and attach a new hosting if you want to while getting the result you really want.

I think if you change the URL from your website it will be difficult for users to find you on the Internet after this changing.

That's right, that will be the challenge for the owner's side. But the owner can create a static page of his old domain that contains the link of his new domain. so, basically, there is still a way that people will find his site online. The twist is, he would really need to to exert effort for managing his links/backlinks associated to that domain.

Being a search engine optimizer i would like to add something in this forum. If you are going to change your url you must be remembered few things. First is that after the changing your traffic will become less. Second point is you will lose you site ranking too. Finally you will have to start from ground to optimize your web site.
