A Very Cool And Little Known WP Trick !

Have you ever wanted to set up a WP site for something but did'nt want it to look like your usual run of the mill WP setup with all the posts, dates, posted by admin type stuff going on. Many people will spend quite a while trying to find a new theme that will give them the plain non-bloggy look they are after but unless you use a premium WP sales page theme, it's still gonna look like a blog.

Whenever you create a new page on your blog you will notice that it is plain and without all of the above mentioned. Infact, I have many of my clients say to me “If only I could make my homepage look like a certain page of my blog” and my answer is always the same...... YOU CAN !!!

Here is how you do it...

Setup your WP blog as you normally would and choose whatever theme you want.
Next, create a new page and add all the content that you would have added to your homepage.
You can call this page whatever you want.

Once created you will see your page title in the top nav bar like you would for any other page you create. Now it's time to make that page your home page.

While in your WP dashboard go to the settings tab on the lower left of your dashboard and click “Reading”. Then where it says “Front page displays” select the static page option then where it says “Front Page” choose the page you just created from the drop down menu. Click “Save Changes” and you are all done. You now have a homepage that does not look like your usual WP blog !

Enjoy

    little known WP trick????

That's old and VERY well known functionality.

Sharing is great - thanks for that, but trying to make out it's some secret trick - not cool.

I'd love to know where you got that statistic!

I agree with Andy, the thread title is deceptive. First this is not a "trick", it's been a feature of WordPress for years. Second, I'm pretty sure anyone with over 15 minutes of WordPress experience is aware of this feature - in fact it's one of the things (setting permalink structure to be SEO-friendly is another) that MOST people do immediately after they install WordPress. So it's hardly "little known"!

I'm sure the minority of WordPress users who aren't aware of this feature appreciate you bringing it up, so this post does have merit (although I believe it actually should be in one of the support forums and not the main discussion one). But you should definitely change the title!

Please dont make the mistake of assuming everyone has as much knowledge as you. Thats a lot of posts you have, you appear to be a very seasoned user. This post IS for the newbies, but I appreciate you taking the time out of your busy day to correct this injustice !

If I could change the title, believe me I would.

Perhaps the WF should implement a duplicate content system whereby anyone trying to post knowledge that is already posted here and known by the masses would be indicated to the would be posters.

Thanks for the bump anyway my friend

Agreed, but I think it was used as bait ;-)

Yeah, that's standard WP 101, but you know what? THANK YOU, OP! A lot of newbies never learn that little "trick" to make a homepage look like static instead of just listing blurbs from your most recent posts.

That was nice of you to share this information. There are many people who do not know how to create a WP blog and struggle. This might have saved someone hours of time trying to figure that out.

Only those that are lazy or ignorant... to read the Codex, WP's online documentation. You can hardly ask anything WP-related that doesn't have the answer there.

re: OP - the "trick" was introduced into WP since version 2.2 in 2007...

It's kinda funny that everyone saying this is "Common Knowledge" have more than 2,000 posts.

      For the record....

I know this has been a wordpress feature for some time
I know that many "Seasoned" warriors will know this

This is simply for those who dont know yet so please just calm down as this post only has good intentions.

      Thanks

It should have said "Cool tip for WP newbies who want a 'normal' Home page"

BUT thanks for reminding me that beginners don't know these things intuitively. We all start somewhere.

    Rankomatic,

You seem to miss the point... Actually, you are more than welcome to share your knowledge here and help out the fellow warriors when they ask web design related questions. (Yes, according to the mods, WP themes belong here, too.)

The controversy came from your title (as it was already mentioned): trying to "sell" a simple feature in WP as the equivalent of inventing the wheel...

The number of posts is irrelevant. Before I made my very first post at WF, I already have had over 4 years working with WP and many, many happy clients with custom themes and web sites.

Honestly, I don't think being a new or old warrior has anything to do with the level of knowledge regarding WP. If one chooses to use WP as their favourite publishing tool - then RTFM. Learn the tool you are using! The same rule applies to any computer software (desktop or online).

So, answering questions and helping fellow warriors - cool.
Starting a "secret revealing" thread about a common feature - not cool.

(I hope nobody plans to make threads about all the existing WP features...)

Believe me when i say if I could change the title I could. No I do not intend on posting a whole raft of wp features. I coach a lot of newbies and none of them know of this feature. I guess they dont read the wp manual cover to cover like you have. I will consider myself "Told Off" o.k. I seriously has no intentions of stirring up individuals like yourself.

You can change the title, and quite easily!

Go back to the original post and click the Edit button.
    Click the Advanced button.
You will now see your title at the very top that you can edit.
Edit it and click the Save Changes button
