how much to pay a freelancer to set up a website?

I'm sure just about everyone would agree with this statement -- "What you pay is what you get"

If you're on a extremely tight budget, then I suggest you go with one of them open source scripts such as: oscommerce.com or magentocommerce.com

Of course the default theme isn't going to be nice, but you can always buy some from templatemonster.com or other template sites.

Once you're sure this is the direction you want to go, then you should hire a web designer to create a custom theme for you.

Are paid scripts any better than the open source ones.

Still wonder if I had to hire a freelancer to have it all set up, what I should expect to pay. It is a simple website: only few pages, only one of them has e-commerce component.

This is a hard question to answer because it really depends on the quality of the coder. (i mean the actual code and not just the design of it)

The two open source scripts I mentioned in my previous post are pretty popular, so you can't go wrong with that if you're looking for something simple.

As for a custom script, you should expect to pay about $50-60/hr for a good freelancer.

it does depend on design and how complicated the shopping cart is.
but if you can stick with wordpress it would be much cheaper (using plugin cart of some sort).
for me I will stick my neck out and say between $700-2000 is what I would pay a freelancer.

For a professional, customized wordpress theme, with shopping cart plugin installed and set-up (along with all the info pages like about, services, contact etc).. you should not stretch beyond the $600 mark. $750 at best, if it includes some fancy slider graphics.. a working web-2-email contact form and goodies like these.

You can get the same thing done for $250-300, if you're not worried about the quality because as CSSArchitect mentioned "What you pay is what you get".

It really depends on what you are looking for you and how much in depth you want them to go.

Personally I charge $147 for basic niche website creation to my students, but I have had business's pay me upwards of $497 for the same services. So it really varies on what you are looking for.

At this moment, I don't have the time for an ecommerce or business website, but I know there are some companies out there, they just charge a lot :\

My suggestion would be to learn and just use something like WordPress.

Well If you are planning via wordpress.. it will cost you e-commerce plugin charges and then you can find peoples of fiverr who will install wordpress and required plugin for 5 dollar. Then there are gigs for logo design and and theme changes as per requirement. All in all wordpress site will cost you around $100 including commercial plugin & fiverr gig charges.

OP, I would personally charge around $1500 - $2000 for the website.

There are peoples on Fiverr who provide great service. Just look at top rated gigs, if they are not offering great service then why the hell they are getting lots of orders for what they are offering. Do you think peoples who work on Fiverr just don't provide great service if yes then i bet you don't know enough about Fiverr yet. Their are peoples even web developers who get their work done by Fiverr guys for as litle as 5 dollar and charge there clients 10 to 20 times more.

I agree that this is a fair price range for a professional website. Sure, you can hire some of the technical bits out for ridiculously cheap fees, but you really need someone who has got a very good grasp of professional design principles, the technical development side (a very good knowledge of the coding languages involved) and a solid knowledge of small business marketing and conversion strategies.

Otherwise you may end up with a site that technically works but looks horrible, or one that looks good but has nasty bugs, or one that looks okay and works okay but doesn't actually get you any customers.

Simple website for a local business (content provided) with an e-commerce component (to sell some inventory)

If you are just looking for factory-made websites (not custom made) that use pre-built templates, it should look something like this for a WordPress-based site:

$150 - Installing and tweaking premium theme of your choice
$100 - Website logo (two drafts)
$100 - Basic e-commerce functionality
-------------------------
Total: $350

If you get all of it done on Fiverr, $15 only ($5 per component).

Again, as someone has already said: "What you pay is what you get."
