1. Can you get a virus or a trojan or other nasty by simply visiting a Wordpress site that has a hacker's message displayed on the site?

2. How do you ensure that all the hackers files have been removed from your site - do you do this yourself or get your hosting company to do it for you?

3. If you have a virus or trojan on your computer, can it be uploaded to your Wordpress site when you login to your dashboard or hosting panel to work on your site?

    (disclaimer) Not a security expert...

    1. Yes. Even if there is no hacker message. If the page has a script that executes when a browser downloads the page... WP or not - you will get it.

    2. Either. Depending on the webmaster's technical skills, knowledge, understanding of the vulnerability etc. Keep in mind, sometimes there is no obvious file, just malicious code inserted in existing files that you wouldn't suspect to be the "bad guy"!

    3. If a computer got a really bad one... the owner doesn't even need to connect via FTP to the website: the virus/script will do it and will infect the site(s) stored in the FTP client.

So, it really depends on what kind of infection happened and different "animals" may require different approach/tool to detect and eliminate them.

Thanks Istvan - that's what I thought. Good to know but hard to figure out how to protect yourself when you accidentally click on a hacked site.
