Hi,
A quick question if I may. I had a blog for years (my first) and while it was nothing to brag about...I liked it.

Anyway my web-host upgraded their servers, and I tried (and failed) to upgrade Wordpress at about the same time.

I then got the error message that no database could be found. I looked, and contacted my host, and the database seemed to have vanished.

Now I used a plugin when upgrading which promoted me to save a backup, which I did...four times over 3 successful upgrades, and the last unsuccessful one.

My host tells me their backup won't work, and my last won't work either in restoring the website. I realize they don't guarantee my files won't go poof and be gone, but WTH??

I would just like to hear your thoughts about this, as most of you will have more knowledge, and experience with these things than I do.

Thanks for any and all replies

    Hi,

Maybe it's time to get a new host?

Unless you had a specific system in place for daily backups with your host, I would believe them if they say it's gone. You could hire someone that knows how to dig around and find old files, but there's no guarantee and you might just be better off restoring off of backup #3 and cutting your losses in time

    Never fully trust your host.

There are a few good database backup plugins in the wordpress repository. Just search for backup.

I would siggest you try them all (or at least the latest updated ones) in a controlled environment (NOT your actual online blog). Then choose the one that do the job you want it to do and works best.

Then do the backups yourself at least once a week.

I could not agree more. Most web hosts are so big now that they don't care about one customer that is having problems. Doing a routine backup should be part of your weekly list of to-do items. There are lots of backup plugins for WP and some for your entire host, if you have more than one database hosted. Just do a google search for "MYSql Backups" and you will get lots of results.
