    Hi Dawn,

You are trying to install Joomla at localhost, i mean local computer?

Well i am not familiar with XAMPP but i am sure after you have downloaded
it and installed it...you would have working Localhost..with MySql,Php,Apahce
    installed at your PC.

Now you need to install Joomla... download it from here
    Joomla!

and then unzip it and copy the Folder to your 'www' or 'root' folder
of XAMPP , ...you may rename the joomla folder as 'joomla'

    Now launch your browser
    and access
    http://localhost/joomla

it will start the installer itself... you need to follow
the steps and it will be easy onward...

Hope this work in your situation,
    Mohsin

You might need to go into phpadmin on localhost and create a user with a password. I think joomla requires a password. Other CMS like drupal do not.

Dawn if you are installing locally you can get the free standalone joomla server for your desktop here:
    Joomla Stand Alone Server*-*Home
you can work locally then upload when done.
    hope the tooth is better!

    Moshin,

I tried to do as you instructed but I get a object cannot be found error when I go to http://localhost/joomla

I did everything you listed to and not sure what happened. What could I have done wrong?

OK. I got to the installation part. But, now it wants me to fill in some information about a database. I don't recall creating a database, and can't for the life of me figure it out. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

go to localhost/xampp/ and then to tools on the left. You will see phpmyadmin there. Click phpmyadmin and you will see a field to create a new database there.

Well, I got into myadmin but it tells me I have no privileges to create a new database. UGH!!!

ok, I'm not sure if this may be the problem or not, but I have been getting an error about my sql server which reads: "your SQL server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with (unable to load SQLBOOT.DLL (HRESULT 0x8007007e)) Please install and rerun setup to correct this problem." This happens everytime I turn on my computer.

Can anyone tell me what the heck this means and how do I go about installing and rerunning setup? Or should I just thow this thing out my second story window? lol

Oh sorry to see this happening to you buddy,

It should have been an easy path :-)

    Do not worry...

Solution to this should be Reinstall(first uninstall) of your Whole XAMPP server...
Or if you can do this ..go for WAMP :-) I use it daily at my PC and it works like a charm.

Install PHP 5 Apache MySQL on Windows : WampServer

When you have downloaded it...you need to do complete install..
it would be simple...just Run setup and then Next Next Next ...thing :-)

when install is done... you may need to restart your Machine.

After that make sure WAMP is running, you will see a little tray-icon of white color..
    like a speed-o-meter...

Or you can check if it is running fine but opening your browser and open
    information.com

    Now installing JOOMLA

    1. You need to download Joomla
    2. Unzip it
    3. Rename the Unzipped folder to something like "jm"
    4. Copy/Move this 'jm' folder to 'www' folder of your WAMP install,
it should be at this location:
    C:\wamp\www

    5. Now you need to create Database for Joomla...
it is very simple with WAMP... simple access this URL
    http://localhost/phpMyAdmin
and in create field box...simply write database name some like "jmdb"
    and click Create

    6. Now access joomla installer by accessing your joomla folder through localhost
    like in our case:
    http://localhost/jm

    7. Installer will run... it will ask you to accept licence and so on...very basic stuff...
just you need to fill database name 'jmdb' and username 'root' and you are done...

At the end you would need to delete the installation folder in Joomla and it wil be
    ready to ROCK :-)

    May this help,
    Mohsin

      Your Welcome.
Drupal is somewhat harder for a newbie to understand than Joomla.
If it worked for you, it might not work for me.

When you install joomla locally, it asks you for the name of the database you want to use. Joomla actually makes the database for you. Just give the database a name, and it is created during the installation.

You may find this link useful:

Another thought, if your workstation is powerful enough you might consider using Microsoft Virtual PC or VMWare to run LINUX inside of Windows.

just my 2 cents is that you need to create the database before you install joomla, joomla doesnt create the database as far as i am aware it just populates it

by far the best solution is use fantastico to install it on the hosting platform you intend to run your live site, although your site may run locally your hosting platform maybe configured differently and you are just heading for another ton of headaches...

I believe Joomla will make a new database if you are installing Joomla locally. I have made many sites locally and have never had to create a database before installing joomla locally.

      Wow, Really awesome tips.

Will install joomla to local pc for development. Still trying different development environments, this might be the key.

      Thanks!

Thanks for the tips. Sorry I haven't been around much, but the host I was using during this topic was not satisfying me at all, so I wasn't really doing anything with setting up my website. About a week ago I found another host that has fantastic results so far!!!

I'm just getting stuff put up, keywords set up, and all that other happy stuff that comes with getting a retail estore ready for grand opening, so I will see how this set-up goes first. If it flops, I'll go back to trying Joomla.
