I've tried a number of different hosts and I recommend Hostgator head and shoulders above all the rest.

GoDaddy, Bluehost or Hostgator. I've used them all, bluehost seems to be the best of those 3.

Since you are wanting UK hosts I would try Stablehost.
They are good hosts in the UK

Honestly, I think Bluehost is not the best having dealt with them myself. Any host that has php and mysql (which is almost all) will work fine for WordPress though. Read reviews, Hostgator is fine for the most part and are one of the largest in the world. But there are lesser known ones like InMotion Hosting who I use and love that work great too.

I had been jumping from host to host (when I only needed a shared server), until I found BlueHost. They were one I had stuck with for over 5 year without any issues that wasn't resolved within hours of opening a ticket. Their servers are pretty good and support isn't bad either. However, it's been 3 years since I had used their services, but I'm pretty sure their quality of service hasn't changed.

Agree with HostGator... I've been with them for many years and so have many of my clients.

Don't host your site at GoDaddy... very poor user interface and you'll be sorry.

I had clients using goDaddy and I would never recommend anyone using them for the same reason.

Both BlueHost and GatorHost for a basic website would be the way to go.

Use Hostgator! it is the best regardless of your location. They have a 24 hours live chat and if you run into any problem they are always there to help. Do not let geographical preference to reduce your quality of a host company because i once had a client whom i was suppose to do a web design job for but before we proceed we need to tell the host company to whitelist her domain (the theme uses some thimthumb.php script that by passes server permission and it is automatically blacklisted so it is necessary that the host is contacted to white-list the domain) we contacted her Canadian based host, emailed them and it took one week for them to reply and on the other hand another friend who was using hostgator that ran into such problem solved it that minute , that moment.
You should use hostagor! they are there to help you! 24 hours availability! they even help in some areas of web development.
