Hi, gooch228, you can set comment on admin area.
I suggest you have to approve every comments before they appear on website.
You can choose which comment you wnat to approve and which one you will delete

Dont approve spam. You can usually avoid spam by activating Askimet.. Later, approve comments which are on the topic and add value to the original post.. One you approve, reply to the comment as well

It's good for your rankings to have comments,it shows interaction on your site and that is what the search engines look for, just filter through the comments and trash the spam and approve the real comments.

    the purpose is

they make your post to be more interactive, if the comments useful

There's quite a debate raging. On one hand, Google "gets" that people load up their posts with keyword-stuffed fake comments. On the other, Google is moving toward giving more love to wen items that have more social interaction, such as comments. I would say they are a good thing, as long as they are relevant. Watch out for crap comments and links out to other people's junk. You could also no-follow comments.

Depends about what is your website (maybe is better not to have comments)...but usually you need to avoid spammers so make sure you change the settings so every comment needs to be approved before appearing on the website.
